Job Description

Job Summary

The primary role of this position is to coordinate and provide direct support for the YouthBuild program, administered through Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) as Juneau Opportunity Build (JOB). Responsibilities include but are not limited to: planning and overseeing participant recruitment; coordinating participant educational services, training, and development; managing a caseload of assigned participants and maintaining complete records; and providing continuous follow-up support. Facilitate communication between partners.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Recruit, enroll, support, and advocate for program participants.
  • Work directly with participants on goal setting and promote individual and personal growth among participants.
  • Coordinate educational, training, and development services for program participants and act as liaison to our services partners.
  • Manage a caseload of assigned program participants via ApprentiScope or other tracking software.
  • Maintain complete records and files for participants.
  • Meet regularly with new program participants, check-in as needed with established participants.
  • Help develop and manage professional and educational resources for participants.
  • Act as a positive role model for program participants and promote a positive supporting environment. Develop and maintain strong relationships with partners.
  • Provide follow-up support services to participants as needed.
  • Arrange additional employment placement services, skills training, placement support, and/or partner referrals.
  • Attend required training and professional development opportunities as requested by the Department of Labor or SHI.
  • Support Juneau Opportunity Build Program Manager as needed.
  • May require driving a company vehicle.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Ability to build, coordinate, and maintain professional relationships with program partners and participants.
  • Technical capacity and expertise in documentation, visualization, navigating databases, and digital reporting.
  • Ability to work independently and show strong initiative.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to work with people from varying backgrounds and experiences.
  • Knowledge of local community organizations is preferred.
  • Committed to healthy and safe programming.
  • Valid drivers’ license.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will have 1 direct report.

Work Environment

This position’s duties are performed at SHI’s offices. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position will require sitting at a desk and using a computer mouse and keyboard. The position may also require standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and crouching. The employee may be required to lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds.

About this Role

This is a full-time benefited position. SHI employees are expected to work during SHI’s regular business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Additionally, employees may work up to or over 45 hours per week or additional time as needed to meet workload demands or special events such as Celebration. Part-time staff are expected to work 20 hours per week. Minimal travel will be required for this position. Travel may include in-person training and relevant professional development opportunities.

Required Education and Experience

  • College degree in career counseling, education, psychology, sociology or a related field. Notable professional experience in a related field may be substituted for post-secondary education.
  • Experience working directly, including classroom facilitation, with a diverse youth population; preferably ages 18-24.
  • Preferred minimum two years working as a case manager, youth development specialist, or a related position with responsibility for managing the documentation for multiple funding streams
  • Preferred experience in implementing career development workshops or on-the-job training programs.
