SCOPE OF ROLE
As a SHEQ Adviser, you will act as the first point of contact for all matters relating to ‘Pursuing a harm-free future’ within your area of the business. You'll provide professional advice and solutions that ensure compliance with legislation and best practice, working closely with the SHEQ Manager on the development and roll-out of divisional plans and improvement projects. This role will require occasional weekend and/or night work to support out-of-hours operations.

HOW YOU’LL SUCCEED

✔ Acting as a visible SHEQ champion, setting an example through SHEQ-related behaviours and demonstrating JSM's values.

✔ Prioritising and managing a variety of day-to-day tasks with minimal supervision, meeting all relevant SHEQ Team KPIs and performance requirements.

✔ Maintaining awareness of relevant JSM and client procedures, discharging your SHEQ duties efficiently and effectively.

✔ Leading others through expertise, influence and coaching, to avoid damage or loss and support sound operational decision-making.

✔ Maintaining frequent formal and informal communication with operational teams, supervisors, managers and external contacts.

✔ Using SHEQ data, KPIs and dashboards to inform objective performance conversations with operational teams, management and clients.

✔ Supporting the development and delivery of site-based SHEQ Awareness Training, Toolbox Talks and Workshops.

✔ Providing independent assurance through regular audits and inspections, ensuring the integrated management system is followed on every site/contract.

✔ Undertaking site competency checks for critical risk activities, including CAT & Genny operations/safe digging, plant operators, and deep excavation/temporary works.

✔ Supporting the compiling, reviewing and revising of project SHEQ documentation and welfare set-up, including CPPs, QMPs, Risk Registers, Method Statements, Risk Assessments, COSHH Assessments and Emergency Plans.

✔ Undertaking specialist monitoring activity as required, including alcohol & drugs testing, face fit testing and Legionella checks.

✔ Acting as dedicated SHEQ contact for specific permanent locations (e.g. River Road, Creek Road, Potters Bar), including PAT testing and fire risk assessment updates.

✔ Promoting the proactive reporting of close calls, acts & conditions, and supporting physical and mental health and wellbeing campaigns.

✔ Ensuring strict adherence to accident and dangerous occurrence reporting procedures under RIDDOR and relevant client requirements.

✔ Ensuring the comprehensive investigation of accidents, incidents, utility damages and quality issues, applying Just Culture and a Human Factors approach to establish root causes and preventative measures.

✔ Supporting the evolution of our Management System and the maintenance of ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certifications.

✔ Acting as Subject Matter Expert and Owner for specific SHEQ procedures/risks, and leading or supporting Group/Divisional Continuous Improvement Projects.

✔ Leading site-based improvement activities using the Problem-Solving Tool Kit and basic Lean & 5S principles.

WHAT IT TAKES

🔹 Experience in a SHEQ adviser role within a utilities or engineering environment.

🔹 Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and present confidently.

🔹 Good analytical and problem-solving skills.

🔹 Working knowledge of NRSWA and HSG47.

🔹 Working knowledge of ISO 9001, 14001 & 45001 and other industry accreditations.

🔹 A flexible, dynamic and pragmatic approach – diplomatic but assertive, equally comfortable working alone or as part of a team.

🔹 Good organisational skills and attention to detail.

🔹 Computer literate and proficient in the Microsoft Office software suite.

Qualifications:

📜 NEBOSH Certificate (Grade 7b), or NEBOSH Diploma / other Level 6–7 qualification (Grade 7a).

📜 IOSH Graduate / Technical Safety Practitioner (Grade 7b), or IOSH Chartered Membership (Grade 7a).

📜 Less than 3 years' post-NEBOSH Certificate experience (Grade 7b), or more than 3 years' (Grade 7a).

📜 Knowledge of Behavioural Based Safety or Human Factors (desirable).

📜 ISO Internal Auditor (desirable).

📜 EUSR or CSCS Card (desirable).
