Job Description

The Mustard Seed helps improve the lives of those in Alberta and British Columbia experiencing poverty by building community, growing hope, and supporting change. Reporting to the Director of Shelters (North), the Shelter Manager provides leadership and strategic planning for frontline operations and staff. Along with ensuring excellence of service for client needs, it is critical that the Shelter Manager works to create a highly relational, change-focused environment led by staff and volunteers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with the Director of Shelters (North), as well as the leadership team of The Mustard Seed, in coordinating and facilitating Shelter programing that reflects the mission and strategic directions of the organization.
  • As required, liaise with HR, Health, and Safety, other The Mustard Seed Programs, Shelter Managers and Supervisors in other cities, Fire Department, as well as businesses in the local area of the Shelter.
  • Prioritize and provide solutions to staff concerns and guest issues.
  • HR designated duties, such as assisting in hiring process and supporting employee relations.
  • Ensure staff are properly trained and orientated, review training material to ensure relevancy.
  • Health and Safety Representative, assist in facilitating Health and Safety meetings and ensuring Health and Safety concerns are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Participate in Health and Safety initiatives for the greater Mustard Seed.
  • Support and ensure compliance with all requirements of The Mustard Seed Health & Safety program for staff/visitors/volunteers;
  • Facilitate meetings with shelter support staff and shelter supervisors;
  • Ensure that all staff and volunteers work effectively within our re-housing strategy and are actively working with guests toward housing options;
  • Collaborate with all program and service areas of The Mustard Seed in order to provide effective referrals;
  • Deal with shelter related guest grievances. Investigate and speak with staff when necessary to find a result or sufficient outcome;
  • Work with Director of Shelters (North) to maintain, develop and evaluate all Basic Service policy, procedures, and budget;
  • Work with the Director of Shelters (North) to manage government relationships at the shelter – yearly audits, check ins, and daily reports;
  • Compile and put forward staffing budget and monitor variances throughout the fiscal year;
  • Monitor the department’s budget and prepare accurate reports, keep records of all expenses, and recommend techniques to reduce costs.
  • Work alongside the Grant department in obtaining applicable grants, and manage corresponding weekly reports and statistics;
  • This role must consult with Director of Shelters (North) on unbudgeted purchases
  • This role must inform the Director of Shelters (North) of any structural changes within the teams, including salary adjustments, dismissals, and promotions;
  • Develop policies, procedures and key performance indicators that will be used to monitor the progress and provide measurable metrics to define the objectives for success.
  • Prepare a monthly report to the Director of Shelters (North) that include statistics, GIK, KPI’s, concerns, successes, and program updates.
  • Help to coordinate and participate in special events and projects as directed by Director of Shelter (North).
  • Other duties as assigned.

LEADERSHIP

  • Provide leadership and support to Shelter Supervisors, and Team Leads;
  • Proactively build partnerships across the organization, connecting individuals around business projects;
  • Make sound decisions in ambiguous or risky situations;
  • Embody the employment values of The Mustard Seed and provide spiritual direction to the team(s).
  • Actively encourage team members to contribute to, and extract value from others;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • 5 years of experience working in the human services field, preferably with homeless serving and/or poverty reduction/relief focused organizations;
  • Bachelor’s degree in social science, Human Services, Strategic Leadership or related field is required; a combination of education and experience may be considered
  • 3-5 years’ experience managing and leading staff;
  • Outstanding conflict resolution skills;
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, diverse environment;
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage crises;
  • Proven ability to network and build strategic partnerships;
  • Vulnerable Sector Check and Employment Security Check are required;
  • A Valid Class 5 Drivers Licence, access to a reliable vehicle, a clean drivers abstract, and 2 million liability insurance are required;

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees sign an agreement indicating that they will respect and not detract from our Statement of Faith
  • The Mustard Seed Shelter is a 24/7 operation which requires the Shelter Manager to carry and delegate on call responsibilities;
  • Time in excess of regular working hours may be required on occasion;
  • Traveling, driving personal vehicle, sitting, and standing are required as part of this role;
  • Office space will be provided;
  • Very fast paced and demanding work environment;
  • Moderate physical effort is required to successfully accomplish the essential job functions, such as keyboarding, writing and verbal communication;
  • Moderate to high mental effort is required to respond to highly intense situations, including traumatic events.
  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive
  • Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • An Employment Background Check is required for all positions at The Mustard Seed
  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees to agree to respect and not detract from The Mustard Seed’s Employment Values during their employment at The Mustard Seed.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • This position requires the use of a company vehicle, and/or personal vehicle for company use. The candidate must have a valid driver’s licence, maintain $2M Vehicle Liability Insurance on the personal vehicle being used, and will need to consent to a driver’s abstract request.
