About Bering Straits Native Corporation

Bering Straits Native Corporation (BSNC) was formed as a result of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) in 1972. BSNC became the regional Alaska Native Corporation (ANC) for the Bering Strait region, which encompasses the majority of the Seward Peninsula and the coastal lands of eastern Norton Sound. This is one of the most culturally diverse regions in the state. Three distinct Native languages are spoken: St. Lawrence Island Yupik, Central Yup’ik, and Inupiaq.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position and are intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Other duties may be assigned.

  • May hire, train, and oversee Shareholder Development staff as assigned.
  • Receive programmatic assignments from the Shareholder Development Manager and coordinate the identification, design and delegation of associated project tasks and projects to assigned team members. Evaluate the effectiveness of assigned programs and recommend areas of improvement.
  • Track team progress, monitor team tasks, ensure optimal team performance and adherence to programmatic deadlines. Oversee scheduling, assignments, and the daily workflow of assigned staff and/or consultants. Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Submit team projects and program metrics to the Shareholder Development Manager for ongoing review and approval and keep the Shareholder Development Manager regularly apprised on programmatic status.

Internship Program

Under the direction of the Shareholder Development Manager, collaborate with shareholder development staff and hiring managers to manage and administer the BSNC Summer Internship program and support communication and recruitment for the program. Ensure that program goals are achieved by helping to prepare tomorrow’s leaders for the workforce by providing paid internships and professional development training each summer to qualified shareholder or descendant students enrolled in college or technical school.

Training Programs

Shareholder Training and Enrichment Program (STEP)

Collaborate with workforce development staff, hiring managers, and the Shareholder Development Manager to continuously improve the program to hire and train shareholders and descendants for mentorship, on the job training, and apprenticeship opportunities designed to develop career pathways, grow the skilled workforce of the corporation, and build additional skills and experience.

Leadership, Exploration, and Development (LEAD) Program

Collaborate with department managers and the Shareholder Development Manager to continuously manage, develop, and improve the leadership development and management training program for shareholder and descendant employees, which is a networking opportunity with other participants in the program and with leaders from the Bering Straits Region and the Native community. It is also an opportunity to gain leadership skills that will assist participants to advance in their career or to acquire other leadership positions and receive mentoring and coaching from experienced leaders.

Shareholder Employee Career Enrichment Program

  • Under the direction of the Shareholder Development Manager, on an annual basis, collaborate with shareholder development staff and department managers to track, coordinate, and manage the fulfillment of Shareholder Employee Enrichment Plans, ensuring effective support for the growth and career development of shareholder and descendant employees.
  • Collaborate with department managers and the Shareholder Development Manager to design, implement, and continuously improve workforce development support and job training resource library to ensure shareholder and descendant employees have access to resources intended to help develop the necessary skills and tools to succeed in their job performance.

Shareholder and Descendant Talent, Sourcing & Recruitment

  • Build and update the database of shareholder and descendant talent records, including the Talent Bank. Work to maintain and improve the Talent Bank and assist in the marketing and recruitment for each program.
  • Collaborate with workforce development staff, hiring managers, and the Shareholder Development Manager on the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of shareholder sourcing and recruiting activities and the accompanying reporting and processes.
  • Conduct outreach to hiring managers for recruitment of open positions.
  • Provide training on the Shareholder Hire Preference policy for hiring managers.
  • Assist with the design and overall implementation of the shareholder and descendant recruiting strategy to find and attract qualified BSNC shareholders and descendants to apply for open positions.
  • Source and attract BSNC Shareholder and Descendant candidates by using databases, social media, direct outreach, attending career fairs, etc.
  • Track fulfillment and selection/non-selection of shareholder candidates in the applicant tracking system and ensure all shareholder applicants are properly dispositioned by hiring managers in the system.
  • Ensure all self-certified applicants are verified for shareholder/descendant status and communicate statuses as they are updated to hiring managers and other applicable internal managers.
  • Conduct audits of existing shareholder/descendant employee lists throughout BSNC and subsidiaries to confirm shareholder/descendant status. Obtain documents as needed to verify the status of employees who self-certify as shareholders or descendants.
  • Provide a calendaring service for BSNC shareholders and descendants to discuss pathways to employment and opportunities within BSNC and discuss workforce development resources available to shareholder and descendant applicants and employees on resume writing, interview skills, skill development, job performance, training, and other professional development activities to accomplish their career goals.

Shareholder and Stakeholder Outreach

  • Under the direction of the Shareholder Development Manager, collaborate with shareholder development staff to perform duties to ensure that BSNC’s shareholders and descendants are provided with timely information on employment, advancement, training, and educational opportunities and any benefits provided by BSNC and/or the Beringia Settlement Trust (BST).
  • Under the direction of the Shareholder Development Manager, collaborate with shareholder development staff to represent BST programs and/or BSNC and promote their missions at selected conferences, job or recruiting fairs, forums, meetings, and events.
  • Under the direction of the Shareholder Development Manager, collaborate with shareholder development staff to manage activities related to the planning, organizing and follow-through on events related to Shareholder Development programs. Direct volunteers and/or participants in performing their duties and responsibilities.
  • Under the direction of the Shareholder Development Manager, collaborate with shareholder development staff to develop and maintain effective relationships with community and organizational leaders that support the goals of the Shareholder Development Department and the mission of BSNC.

Administration and Administrative Support

  • Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • Under the direction of the Shareholder Development Manager, collaborate with shareholder development staff to develop reports to assist with analyzing organizational objectives and relevant financial data, program structure and objectives, and other sources of funding and budgets.
  • Under the direction of the Shareholder Development Manager, collaborate with shareholder development staff to develop and document Shareholder Development Department procedures.
  • Under the direction of the Shareholder Development Manager, collaborate with shareholder development staff to assist with the preparation and monitoring of annual department budgets for each upcoming year as needed.
  • Under the direction of the Shareholder Development Manager, collaborate with shareholder development staff to provide information and reports to support the development of short and long-term strategic plans and goals relating to shareholder development and BST programs and monitor and report on progress of strategic plan initiatives relating to shareholder development and BST programs.
  • Maintain computer and manual filing systems. Coordinate office procedures.
  • Perform administrative duties such as filing, typing, copying, binding, scanning, faxing, etc. Prepare template agreements and emails on behalf of other office staff. Prepare accurate meeting minutes and monthly expense reports for managers and staff as directed.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned. Must be flexible and available to perform other duties in support of various BSNC and Shareholder Development programs.

Required (Minimum Necessary) Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Human Resources, Education, or related field.
  • A combination of education and experience may be used to meet educational requirements.

Level of Experience Requirements:

  • 3+ years in a supervisory role with responsibility for employee oversight and performance.
  • Must be a Shareholder, Descendant, or a spouse of a Shareholder.
  • Experience with shareholder development or employee relations.
  • Experience with planning, organizing, and managing activities and events.
  • Experience with planning and administering special projects.
  • Experience with job sourcing and recruitment.
  • Valid state driver’s license

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Proficient with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe.
  • Ability to travel as necessary and willing to work days, evenings, nights, overtime, and weekends as required.
  • Working knowledge of ANCSA and Alaska Native history.
