Catholic Social Services is currently seeking a part-time 37.5 hours per week, Settlement Counsellor in EDMONTON to join our Immigration and Settlement Services team. This position is a contract part-time (37.5 hours/ week position) and Contract until March 31, 2027 with possibility of extension. Job application closing date: August 18, 2026.
The Settlement Counsellor for Temporary Foreign Workers plays a vital role in helping newcomers settle into their community by providing information on health care, housing, schools, and assisting with forms and applications. They also connect workers with cultural, faith-based, and community resources and support them in understanding options for permanent residency. This free, one-on-one service is offered in multiple languages and provides general guidance, with legal advice available through referrals if needed.
Key responsibilities:
• Provide a respectful, and culturally sensitive welcome to put clients at ease.
• Conduct initial orientation to inform newcomers about life in Canada, covering topics like life-skills, rights and responsibilities.
• Assess and prioritize clients' needs, develop service plans.
• Identify barriers to learning and providing relevant information.
• Provide translation/interpretation services and support with documentation.
• Assist clients in navigating mainstream systems and community resources, enhance their self-sufficiency.
• Assist with applications for Social Insurance Numbers, Alberta Personal Health Number, and other documentation.
• Ensure client confidentiality in all interactions and documentation.
• Provide interpretation and translation services as required to facilitate client support.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to enhance service coordination and improve client access to settlement resources.
• Maintain accurate client records in internal databases, ensuring proper documentation of assessments, settlement plans, referrals, and follow-ups.
• Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and stay current with best practices.
• Stay informed on immigration policies and local service trends to provide up-to-date, relevant guidance.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
What This Job Requires:
• Diploma/Degree in human services/Education/Social Work or equivalent
• Must be proficient in English.
• Must be able to communicate in Ukrainian fluently.
• Certification as a Settlement Practitioner through AAISA is desired and expected within 3 years of date of hire.
• Two (2) years’ experience working with newcomers to Canada is preferred.
• Superior knowledge of Canadian social systems: settlement and immigration, health, legal, education, financial, social, housing, and employment
• Supportive Counselling skills to conduct holistic assessments, set realistic goals and action plans with clients and provide appropriate supports and referrals.
