Course Number and Title: RLG373H1F: Buddhist Ritual

Course Description: Daily worship, the alms round, life-crisis celebrations, healing rituals, meditation, festivals, pilgrimage, the consecration of artefacts and taking care of the ancestors are among the forms of Buddhist ritual introduced and analyzed in this course. Liturgical manuals, ethnographic descriptions and audiovisual records form the basis for a discussion of the role of ritual as text and event.

Sessional Dates of Appointment:  September 1, 2026 - December 31, 2026

Salary:

  • Sessional Lecturer I - $9,820.70
  • Sessional Lecturer I Long-Term - $10,510.04
  • Sessional Lecturer II - $10,510.04
  • Sessional Lecturer II Long-Term - $10,760.28
  • Sessional Lecturer III - $10,760.28
  • Sessional Lecturer III Long-Term - $11,030.36

Please note that should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Religion or a related field
  • Ability to address the themes of the course to which the application is being made

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated teaching experience as a teaching assistant or course instructor in Buddhism

  • Extensive knowledge of the subject area is highly desirable, with particular focus on ritual and material studies

of Duties:

  • Develop a detailed syllabus and curriculum for the course
  • Presenting weekly lectures and classes as appropriate
  • Evaluate student performance
  • Grading papers and exams
  • Hold office hours and meet with students as they request
  • Handling other pedagogical and administrative tasks ordinarily associated with an undergraduate course
