Course number and title: INI102H1F: Storytelling Through Creative Nonfiction

Course description: The course is an introduction to creative writing techniques and various forms of creative nonfiction (personal essay, biographical essay, flash nonfiction, lyric essay, visual essay, and other experimental forms) through which students will explore and develop their conscious connection to the natural-urban landscape. The course will include activities such as field trips, readings, interviews, and journaling to generate the material for essays on engagement with nature in the city. Restricted to first-year students.

Class schedule: Thursdays from 2-5pm

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026

Salary:

Sessional Lecturer 1 - $9,997.48 (includes 4% vacation pay)

Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term - $10,699.22 (includes 6% vacation pay)

Sessional Lecturer 2 - $10,699.22 (includes 6% vacation pay)

Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term - $10,953.96 (includes 6% vacation pay)

Sessional Lecturer 3 - $10,953.96 (includes 6% vacation pay)

Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term - $11,228.90 (includes 6% vacation pay)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

  • MFA in creative writing or related field, or relevant professional experience
  • Publication record in creative nonfiction, poetry, essay, or other literary forms
  • At least 3 years of experience teaching creative writing

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in pedagogy
  • Familiarity with the range of writing ability of undergraduates
  • Experience using field trips, journaling, interviews, or observational writing as part of creative writing pedagogy

of duties:

The Sessional Lecturer will teach the full course, conduct all grading, and prepare and submit all final marks. In addition, the Sessional Lecturer will hold office hours each week, and answer student questions by email and/or appointment. A past instructor’s syllabus and detailed course outline will be provided to the Sessional Lecturer.
