Course description

This course is an introduction to the major theories, methods and techniques involved in translating from English into Chinese. The course focuses on practical training for novice translators. Through practice, students will familiarize themselves with the translation process and develop a variety of translation skills and strategies. Students will discuss and reflect upon issues encountered during translation and develop decision-making ability to deal with translation challenges. This course provides a solid foundation for students to continue their studies in translation at the advanced level. As part of this course, students have the option of participating in an international learning experience that will have an additional cost and application process.

Salary

Sessional Lecturer I - $9,997.48 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term - $10,699.22 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II - $10,699.22 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term - $10,953.96 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III - $10,953.96 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term - $11,228.90 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications

Graduate-level degree in translation and localization management in Chinese, or a related field is required.
Demonstrated knowledge in translation and experience teaching university-level translation courses are required.
(Near-)native fluency in Mandarin Chinese is required.

Preferred qualifications

Demonstrated excellence in teaching this course, or a similar course at the university level, is preferred.

Experience in localization management in Chinese, with CAT tools, Translation Management Systems (TMS), neural machine translation is preferred.
Certification and membership in good standing in one or more of the recognized translation associations in Chinese to English (ATA, ATIO, STIBC) are preferred.
Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12.

All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; out-of-class interactions with students via e-mail and office hours; development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; order all necessary readings.
