ServiceNow CMDB Architect

As a Senior Software Engineer- ServiceNow CMDB Architect with Convera, he ServiceNow CMDB Architect is responsible for designing, implementing, governing, and optimizing the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) within the ServiceNow platform. This role ensures enterprise-wide configuration data accuracy, establishes configuration management processes and policies, and integrates the CMDB with ITOM, ITSM, Asset Management, Security, Observability, and Cloud platforms. The CMDB Architect will serve as the technical and functional authority on CMDB architecture, data modeling, discovery strategies, service mapping, and configuration governance.

Key Responsibilities

CMDB Architecture & Design

  • Define and own the CMDB data model, CI classes, relationships, and federation strategy aligned to organizational services and architecture standards.
  • Lead CMDB roadmap development, including maturity model evolution and multi-phase implementation planning.
  • Establish and enforce CMDB data governance, CI class definitions, naming conventions, and standardized data ingestion patterns.
  • Design CMDB integration patterns with ServiceNow ITOM (Discovery, Service Mapping, Event Mgmt, AIOps), ITAM/SAM, HRSD, SecOps, Cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), and enterprise systems.

Discovery & Service Mapping

  • Lead the configuration and optimization of Discovery and Service Mapping to ensure accurate representation of application / infrastructure dependencies.
  • Develop blueprints, business services definitions, dependency maps, and service topology models.
  • Establish health score modeling, reconciliation rules, and normalization logic to ensure data accuracy and completeness.

Configuration Management Governance

  • Define and oversee Configuration Management policies and procedures, including CI lifecycle management, attestation, audit controls, and change-driven CI updates.
  • Partner with Change Management, ITSM owners, Cloud teams, Platform teams, Network, and Application owners to enforce CI accountability.
  • Implement automated attestation frameworks to ensure business applications and infrastructure CI records remain up-to-date.

Data Quality & Operations

  • Define and run CMDB health metrics, dashboards, compliance reporting, and exception remediation workflows.
  • Drive ongoing continuous data quality improvement leveraging ServiceNow’s CMDB Health Dashboards, Reconciliation, Data Certification, and Discovery patterns.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve data drift, orphan CIs, duplicate CI behavior, and inaccurate relationships.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Act as the primary CMDB subject matter expert to leadership, auditors, architecture governance boards, and operational teams.
  • Conduct CMDB training, documentation, platform standards playbooks, and service onboarding processes.
  • Influence strategic planning and build alignment across stakeholders in IT Operations, Engineering, Security, and Risk/Compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in IT Service Management, Configuration Management, ServiceNow platform architecture, or Enterprise Architecture.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience working with ServiceNow CMDB, ITOM Discovery, and Service Mapping.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure technologies (Linux/Windows servers, networks, cloud services, containers, databases, middleware, load balancers).
  • Experience integrating CMDB with CI pipelines, monitoring tools (Datadog, Prometheus, AppDynamics, Splunk), cloud CMDBs, identity & asset sources.
  • Expertise with CMDB data modeling, reconciliation, normalization, Transform Maps, IntegrationHub, APIs.
  • ITIL Foundation certification required; ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) – CMDB / Discovery / Service Mapping preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate across infrastructure, applications, architecture, and business leadership groups.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with SAM/ITAM workflows, cost allocation/FinOps, and inventory compliance tracking.
  • Familiarity with security CMDB feeds, vulnerability management, and risk scoring.
  • Experience operating within regulated industries (Finance, Healthcare, Government) and audit-ready CMDB governance programs.

Success Measures

  • Increasing CMDB completeness, correctness, and compliance metrics.
  • Successful onboarding of business services into CMDB.
  • Strong alignment across architecture, operations, security, and change management teams.
  • Reduction in incident resolution time and improved mean-time-to-repair (MTTR) due to accurate CI/service dependency visibility.
