Job Description

The Central Distribution Technician supports hospital operations by receiving, managing, and delivering medical supplies and equipment to patient care areas. This role ensures supplies are handled accurately, stored properly, and delivered on time to support safe and efficient patient care across the organization.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required
  • Maryland Resident
  • Individuals eligible for the Maryland Service Year Program (generally ages 18–24)
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience in supply chain, distribution, or customer service preferred
  • Licensure/Certification: None required
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Basic computer skills and ability to learn inventory systems
    • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
    • Good communication and customer service skills
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

What You’ll Do

  • Receive, stock, and distribute medical and surgical supplies throughout the hospital
  • Use computerized systems for inventory tracking, replenishment, and distribution
  • Deliver supplies, equipment, and procedure trays to patient care areas
  • Monitor inventory levels and participate in cycle counts and annual inventory
  • Rotate stock and check expiration dates to ensure product integrity
  • Maintain organized storage areas and ensure supplies are readily available
  • Communicate with departments to ensure timely and accurate delivery of materials
  • Support overall supply chain operations to meet the needs of clinical teams

What the Job is Really Like

  • You’ll spend much of your day moving throughout the hospital, delivering supplies to different departments
  • The role is physically active, involving walking, lifting, pushing carts, and stocking supplies (as shown in physical demands on page 2)
  • Accuracy is critical—delivering the wrong item or missing inventory can directly impact patient care
  • You’ll balance speed and precision, especially when responding to urgent supply needs
  • The role is customer-facing, as you’ll regularly interact with clinical staff who rely on you
  • Work can be repetitive (stocking, counting), but requires constant attention to detail
  • Priorities may shift quickly based on hospital needs or supply shortages

Work Environment & Demands

  • Hospital environment with frequent movement between departments
  • Continuous standing and walking, with frequent lifting and pushing of supplies and carts (page 2 physical demands)
  • Requires strong attention to detail and ability to multitask (as noted in mental demands on page 2)
  • Occasional exposure to clinical environments and infection control protocols
  • Fast-paced, service-oriented setting supporting patient care

  • Supplies are delivered accurately and on time to the correct departments
  • Inventory is well-managed, organized, and properly rotated
  • Clinical teams receive the materials they need without delays
  • Documentation and system entries are accurate and up to date
  • You respond quickly and effectively to urgent requests
  • You contribute to a smooth, efficient supply chain that supports patient care
