Job Category: Skilled Labor - Trades, The Service Technician- Class A performs advanced diagnostics, repair, and overhaul of heavy-duty trucks and related equipment with minimal supervision. This position services as a technical leader within the Service Department, assisting in the training and development of Class B, Class C, and Intern technicians. The Class A Technician is responsible for accurately diagnosing complex issues, completing high-quality repairs, and supporting overall shop productivity and customer uptime.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnostics and Repair
  • Perform advanced diagnostics on engines, electrical systems, fuel systems, emissions systems, and drivetrains
  • Identify root causes of complex mechanical and electrical issues and complete repairs
  • Disassemble, inspect, and rebuild components using appropriate tools and measuring devices
  • Perform inspections of critical systems including brakes, steering, fuel, and suspension
  • Test repaired systems and components to verify proper operation
  • Technical Leadership and Support
  • Assist in training and mentoring Class B, Class C, and Intern technicians
  • Provide guidance and support on complex diagnostic and repair issues
  • Inspect work in process and assist with quality control when needed
  • Collaborate with team members to improve shop efficiency and effectiveness
  • Support a positive and productive team environment
  • Work Management and Documentation
  • Accurately document all diagnostics, repairs, and labor performed ("story writing").
  • Follow Company procedures for work orders, time tracking, and parts usage
  • Communicate repair status and additional needs to service advisors or management
  • Maintain productivity standards while ensuring quality workmanship
  • Keep work area clean, organized, and properly maintained
  • Safety and Compliance
  • Follow all safety policies, procedures, and OSHA requirements
  • Properly use and maintain tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment
  • Maintain awareness of environmental and safety hazards in the shop
  • Participate in required training and certification programs
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with Company and regulatory standards

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below are representative of those required. This position involves hands-on work in a shop environment, including frequent use of tools, equipment, and machinery. Employees are required to stand, walk, bend, lift, and work in various conditions, including exposure to noise, fumes, and moving mechanical parts. Lifting up to 50-100 pounds may be required. Education

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical or diesel technology degree preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in heavy-duty truck repair required
  • Intermediate computer skills required, including diagnostic software and service systems

Skills Required

  • Advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across mechanical and electrical systems
  • Strong understanding of heavy-duty truck systems including engine, fuel, electrical, brake, and emissions systems
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to mentor and assist less experienced technicians
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including accurate repair documentation ("story writing")
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools, gauges, and electronic testing equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage time efficiently
  • Strong safety awareness and adherence to shop procedures

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • CDL preferred but not required. With a valid CDL, must be able to meet Company insurability requirements
  • OEM and ASE certifications preferred

  • Occasional travel to other Company locations or trainings may be required
