Job Description

Central States Group, A Cogent Company, is seeking a Service Technician to join our team in Cedar Rapids, IA. In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for servicing, repairing, troubleshooting, and maintaining submersible pumps, motors, and other rotating equipment used in the water and wastewater industry.

The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical service background—such as automotive, heavy equipment, industrial maintenance, or similar—and proven electrical and electro-mechanical troubleshooting skills. Experience working with electrical motors and single-phase and three-phase electrical systems is required.

This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanically and electrically skilled technician who enjoys solving problems, working with customers, and continuously expanding their technical knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Service, repair, maintain, and troubleshoot submersible pumps, motors, and other rotating equipment commonly used in water and wastewater applications.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and electro-mechanical equipment issues.
  • Troubleshoot single-phase and three-phase electrical systems, motor controls, and electrical motors.
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams and apply electrical theory to diagnose equipment failures.
  • Perform failure analysis and determine the cause of equipment problems.
  • Prepare accurate repair estimates and technical repair reports, including part numbers, part descriptions, estimated and actual labor hours, failure diagnosis, and work performed.
  • Accurately document labor, parts, materials, and repairs to ensure quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Work independently or as part of a team, often under tight deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively with customers and internal teams regarding equipment condition, repairs, and service requirements.
  • Provide professional, responsive customer service.
  • Follow all company safety practices and procedures.
  • Stay current on products, applications, technology, industry trends, and best practices through continuous learning.
  • Be willing to travel as needed, with significant travel expected as experience and responsibilities develop.
  • Work overtime and respond to short-notice service needs when required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical or vocational training in mechanics, electrical, electronics, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong background in automotive, heavy equipment, industrial maintenance, or similar mechanical service.
  • Proven experience with electrical motors and electro-mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Experience troubleshooting single-phase and three-phase electrical systems and motor controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and apply basic electrical theory.
  • Previous experience repairing submersible pumps, rotating equipment, or equipment commonly used in water and wastewater facilities is preferred.
  • Strong mechanical problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision as well as effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, continuously changing environment and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Positive, professional attitude with a commitment to customer satisfaction.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed.
  • Ability to work overtime on short notice.
  • Ability to safely lift, maneuver, and work with heavy objects, parts, equipment, and materials.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for a hands-on technician who enjoys troubleshooting and fixing things, takes pride in quality workmanship, and is willing to continue learning. Candidates with strong mechanical experience who also have solid electrical knowledge and motor troubleshooting experience are encouraged to apply.

Experience with submersible pumps or water and wastewater equipment is a plus, but strong transferable experience in automotive, heavy equipment, industrial maintenance, or other electro-mechanical environments will be considered.
