What you’ll do: You’ll directly supervise the transportation officers and other designated employees. Responsible for the custody and care of inmates; maintaining order and discipline among Inmates; scheduling; training; and supervising staff in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) directives.

Essential Functions:

  1. Serve as transportation assistant line supervisor. Assist with providing updated information and transportation schedules to assigned staff daily.
  2. Maintain daily transportation shift roster to ensure each transportation team is appropriately staffed and issued appropriate equipment; assist in addressing staffing shortages and vacancies when they arise.
  3. Supervise, protect, instruct, train, counsel and evaluate assigned employees and inmates
  4. Supervise and direct searches for contraband and provide security.
  5. Supervise and provide custody and security of inmates including observation of Inmates and inmates assigned to work duty, which includes long periods of sitting and standing.
  6. Perform specific security functions including “pat” and “strip” searches, by squatting and bending to perform such functions.
  7. Responds to emergencies including climbing stairs, steps, and ladders while searching for escaped inmates, hearing calls for and calling for help, giving first aid at the emergency site, carrying an injured or unconscious inmate or employee various distances to safety up or down stairs, steps, and ladders; and use force and deadly force to include the use of chemical agents and firearms to control Inmates.
  8. Read, review and properly apply information found in inmate records which is related to the Inmates’ health and safety and to the security of the facility. Provide appropriate information as needed to other personnel and maintain confidentiality.
  9. Assist in the supervision of the preparation and maintenance of records, forms and reports.
  10. Prepare and complete required incident reports and logs in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner.
  11. Comply with MTC/TDCJ policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  12. It is expected the incumbent will work overtime when directed to do so.
  13. Complete weekly rounds of all areas relating to transportation such as the reception/discharge area, parking area where fleet is staged, local hospitals, etc. and be accessible to staff where needed.
  14. Transfer and transport inmates by walking or riding in vehicles. Restrain and secure assaultive inmates as needed.
  15. Conduct weekly vehicle inspections.
  16. Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  17. Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed; provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.
  18. Maintain accountability of staff, Inmates and property; adhere to safety practices.

It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED. Two (2) years full-time, wage-earning correctional custody or law enforcement experience. Valid driver’s license in the state of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.

Post-hire Requirements:

Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements to include physical agility testing and pass an annual background check, which must be approved by TDCJ.
