Basic Purpose

Positions in this jobfamily are assigned responsibilities related tomaintainingthe security,controland custody ofinmates in a state adultcorrectionalfacility

TypicalFunctions

  • Provides security and supervision to inmates in a variety ofsituations and activities;maintainsecurity ofan assigned area or post.

  • Provides security and supervision over inmate work crews; escorts inmates to work sites; inventories and controls all equipment, weapons,toolsand keys.

  • Patrols yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors,dormitoriesand work areas on an assigned shift;observesactivities and movements ofinmates; manages inmate conduct,workand discipline.

  • Maintains order and discipline in programs and during meals and recreation periods; inspects living areas,facilities and work locationsfor unauthorized objects or materials; makes reports on incidents.

  • Operates manually or electronically controlled security equipmentmaintainingcontrolled movement ofinmates,staffand the public.

  • Conducts inmate counts; performs searches ofinmates and living quartersfor contraband; enforces institutional rules and regulations.

  • Prepares written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior,statusand movement.

  • Participates on escape and apprehension teams; responds to riots andfires.

Level Descriptor

This is the leadership level where employees are assigned responsibilities as a correctional security sergeant to include such duties as serving as a team leader or a lead worker and may alsobe responsibleforproviding training, assigning work and other related duties. Employees assigned to this level that are working within an institution may be charged with independently performing a specializedfunction requiring a high degree ofjudgment and skill such as an inmate public work crew officer, gun gang officer, K-9 unit officer, transportation officer, restricted housing unit officer, key and tool officer, control room officer, visiting room officer, gate officer, activities officer, hospital security posts or armory officer.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge ofthefundamentals ofEnglish usage; ofbasic math; ofreporting writing; ofthe use and care offirearms; ofproper restraint methods and techniques; ofself-defense methods; ofthe methods and objectives ofdiscipline requiredfor inmates under restraint; and ofthe psychology ofinmate behavior. Ability is required to evaluate situations and adopt effective courses ofaction; to exercise alertness and be able to act quickly and effectively in an emergency situation; tofollow oral and written instructions; to gather and organizefacts and complete clear, concise reports; to communicate effectively; to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to maintain proficiency withfirearms; and to assess and manage conflicts within the inmate population.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist ofthe statutory requirements contained in Title 57 O.S., Section 510.A.2: “a. The minimum agefor service shall be twenty (20) years ofage. The Director shall have the authority to establish the maximum agefor correctional officers entering service and b. possession ofthirty (30) semester hoursfrom an accredited college or university; or possession ofa high school diploma acquiredfrom an accredited high school or GED equivalent testing program and graduationfrom a training course conducted by or approved by the Department and certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training either prior to employment or during thefirst six (6) months ofemployment....” plus twenty-four months ofexperience in correctional or security workfor a governmental agency or private corrections agency. NOTE: Successful completion ofthe GED test is based upon standardsestablishedby the Oklahoma Department ofEducation.

Special Requirements

Per 57 OS 510 applicants/employees in this jobfamily shall be subject to thefollowingadditionalrequirements: c. satisfactory completion ofminimum testing or professional evaluation through the Merit System ofPersonnel Administration todeterminethefitness ofthe individual to serve in the position. Written evaluations shall besubmittedto the Department ofCorrections; and

d. satisfactory completion ofphysical in keeping with the conditions ofthe job description on an annual basis and along the guidelines asestablishedby the Department ofCorrections;

Applicants mustpossessa valid driver’s license at the time ofappointmentin order toperform necessary travel.

Applicants will be subject to drug testing.

Applicants must be willing and able to work any assigned shift or day ofthe week, andadditionalshifts asrequired

NOTE: Employees in this job classification may bedesignatedas peace officers by the Director andrequiredto meet the training and screening requirements conducted by the Department and certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training. (57 O.S. 510) Training will include physical conditioning, self-defense tactics, and receipt ofan application ofoleoresin capsicum (OC) spray.

No person who has received a verdict ofguilty or pled guilty or nolo contendere to any offenserequiredto registerpursuant tothe Sex Offenders Registration Act is eligiblefor employment as a peace officer. (57 O.S. 589.C)

No person who has been convicted ofa crime ofmoral turpitude who has not received afull pardonfrom the proper agency is eligiblefor employment as a peace officer. (70 O.S. 3311)

No person who has been convicted ofa nonviolentfelony and who has not received afull pardonfrom the proper authority, or who has been convicted ofany otherfelony offense, is eligiblefor employment in this job classification. (21 O.S. 1283.B)

No person who has been convicted ofa misdemeanor crime ofdomestic violence, who has not been pardonedfor, or had the conviction expunged or set aside, or is subject to a court order that restrains the personfrom harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or the partners’ child or engaging in other conduct that would place an intimate partner or the partners’ child in reasonablefear ofbodily injury and includes afinding that the person is a credible threat; or who has been dishonorably dischargedfrom any branch ofthe armed services is eligiblefor employment in this job classification. (18 U.S.C. 922)

The Department ofCorrections hasdeterminedthat some positions in this jobfamily are safety sensitive as defined by63 O.S. § 427.8
