Senior/Staff Data Scientist (Python/R/Databricks) - Portugal Full Remote

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

A retail company investing seriously in data is building a brand-new Data Science team, and we're looking for the three people who will form its core. This is a rare chance to join at the very beginning: you'll help define how the team works, which standards it follows, and how statistical insight drives business decisions. It's a senior, fully remote role for experienced Data Scientists who want real ownership and a strong statistical focus.

PROJECT & CONTEXT

The project is centred on statistics applied to retail. You'll turn complex data into reliable, actionable insight, working with SQL, Python, and R on Databricks in a cloud environment (Azure preferred). Beyond analysis, you'll design robust data structures using established modeling methodologies and make sure your work reaches production through CI/CD pipelines. As a founding member of the team, your influence will go well beyond individual projects. The role is 100% remote, open to candidates based in Portugal.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR (Required)

• 7+ years of experience as a Data Scientist
• Strong statistical background (hypothesis testing, inference, experimental design)
• Proficiency in SQL, Python 3, and R (all three required)
• Hands-on experience with Databricks
• Extensive experience with CI/CD tools and pipelines
• Experience with at least one major cloud provider (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
• Strong understanding of data modeling methodologies: Kimball, Inmon, and Data Vault
• Fluent English, written and spoken
• Based in Portugal

NICE TO HAVE (Preferred)

• Hands-on experience with Azure as your primary cloud platform
• Experience in the retail sector
• Background at Staff level, mentoring other data professionals or setting technical direction
• Experience building or scaling a data team from the ground up

Compensation: €2,500 – €3,250/month net, depending on experience and seniority level.
