Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Compute – Linux/Unix L2 Engineer with 5–7 years of hands-on experience supporting and administering enterprise Linux/Unix infrastructure across on-premises and cloud environments. The role will be responsible for advanced troubleshooting, server administration, patching, performance monitoring, security remediation, automation, and operational support of Linux/Unix platforms. The engineer will handle technical escalations from L1 teams, perform root cause analysis, execute infrastructure changes, and support workloads hosted on physical, virtual, and cloud platforms. The ideal candidate should have strong knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), Ubuntu, and relevant Unix platforms where applicable, along with shell scripting, Ansible, VMware, Microsoft Azure and/or AWS experience.

Key Responsibilities

: 1. Linux/Unix Server Administration Administer, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise Linux/Unix servers across on-premises and cloud environments. Manage server provisioning, configuration, upgrades, decommissioning, and routine maintenance. Perform filesystem, LVM, swap, user/group, permissions, process, service, package, and kernel-related administration. Troubleshoot OS, boot, filesystem, memory, CPU, disk, network, and application-service issues. 2. L2 Incident & Problem Management Take ownership of incidents escalated from L1 teams and drive them to resolution within agreed SLA targets. Perform advanced troubleshooting using system logs, journal logs, performance utilities, network diagnostics, and OS-level tools. Perform technical analysis for recurring incidents and contribute to Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and permanent resolution. Coordinate with L3, application, database, storage, network, security, backup, and cloud teams for complex incidents. 3. Linux/Unix OS & Service Management Manage Linux services using tools such as systemd/systemctl and other platform-specific service utilities. Administer users, groups, sudo access, file permissions, SSH configurations, cron jobs, and system services. Support package management using technologies such as RPM, YUM/DNF, APT, and Zypper, depending on the Linux distribution. Troubleshoot server boot issues, service failures, package dependencies, and OS configuration problems. 4. Storage & File System Administration Manage Linux filesystems and storage configurations including LVM, filesystem expansion, mount points, NFS, and swap. Troubleshoot disk utilization, filesystem capacity, mount, permissions, and I/O-related problems. Coordinate with storage teams for SAN/NAS and infrastructure-related storage issues. 5. Cloud Infrastructure Support Administer and support Linux workloads hosted on Microsoft Azure and/or AWS. Perform operational activities for cloud-hosted virtual machines including provisioning support, monitoring, disk management, resizing, connectivity troubleshooting, and maintenance. Troubleshoot Linux OS-level issues in cloud environments and coordinate with cloud/platform teams for underlying infrastructure issues. Support hybrid environments where workloads span on-premises infrastructure and public cloud. 6. Virtualization Support Support Linux/Unix servers hosted on VMware vSphere/ESXi and other applicable virtualization platforms. Perform VM-related operational activities including provisioning, resource adjustment, snapshot coordination, and troubleshooting. Investigate VM performance and availability issues in collaboration with virtualization/platform teams. 7. Patching & Vulnerability Remediation Plan and execute Linux/Unix OS patching and security remediation activities. Perform pre-patch validation, patch deployment, controlled reboots, and post-patch health checks. Troubleshoot patching and package-management failures. Coordinate with security and vulnerability-management teams to remediate identified OS vulnerabilities within agreed timelines. 8. Performance Monitoring & Troubleshooting Monitor and analyze CPU, memory, load average, disk utilization, I/O, network performance, services, processes, and filesystem capacity. Use Linux diagnostic utilities such as top, vmstat, iostat, sar, ps, ss, df, du, free, journalctl, dmesg, and system logs. Identify performance bottlenecks and recommend appropriate remediation or capacity changes. Analyze recurring alerts and support proactive infrastructure improvement. 9. Automation & Scripting Develop and maintain Shell/Bash scripts to automate repetitive administration, monitoring, health-check, and reporting activities. Use tools such as Ansible for configuration management and infrastructure automation where applicable. Identify manual operational activities suitable for automation and standardization. Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing manual effort and operational errors

Skill Requirements

Strong hands-on experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and good working knowledge of platforms such as Oracle Linux, Ubuntu, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Unix administration exposure, such as IBM AIX or Oracle Solaris, would be advantageous where these platforms are part of the environment. Strong understanding of Linux boot processes, services, processes, users/groups, permissions, filesystems, and package management. Hands-on knowledge of LVM, NFS, filesystem management, swap, mount points, and storage troubleshooting. Experience troubleshooting Linux performance issues involving CPU, memory, disk I/O, processes, and network connectivity. Good knowledge of SSH, SFTP, DNS, TCP/IP, routing basics, ports, firewall concepts, and name resolution.

Other Requirements

Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills. Ability to independently handle complex L2 technical incidents and escalations. Good ownership and follow-through during critical production incidents. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively with geographically distributed and cross-functional infrastructure teams. Good documentation and knowledge-management skills. Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to L1 engineers. Comfortable working in a 24x7 infrastructure operations/support model, where applicable.
