Senior Utility Service Specialist – Industrial Gas Operator
The Utility Service Specialist Senior – Industrial Gas Operator is a master level technician and recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME) in natural gas meter and regulator operations. In this role, you will lead emergency response activities, manage specialized projects, and provide peer training across multiple utility work groups. You will play a critical part in ensuring safe, reliable, and cost-effective natural gas services for our customers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the first responder to natural gas utility emergencies, ensuring public safety and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Lead and manage projects, including scope development, cost estimation, contractor coordination, and inspection of completed work.
- Operate and maintain natural gas equipment, including meters, modules, regulators, and the CNG bypass truck.
- Install and maintain gas meters in accordance with PUC/PHMSA regulations.
- Collaborate with contractors and engineers to design and implement gas service infrastructure.
- Provide expert guidance on gas service regulation, safety operations, and best practices to internal teams and customers.
- Perform all required duties of a Utility Service Specialist Senior.
Qualifications & Expectations:
- Four or more years of experience in gas metering and piping, including installation, maintenance, and repair of meters, regulators, and pipe preferred.
- Mech IV License required or must be obtained within one year of hire.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must obtain certifications in Confined Space, Overhead Crane Operations, and Self-Contained Electric Metering within six months of hire or at the first available training opportunity.
- Will work on a two-person truck with a dedicated team member.
- Must be willing to rotate between the gas manifold and large industrial gas truck as operational needs require.
- Will be certified to set relief valves on gas meter loops.
- Will install vent stacks when applicable.
- Responsible for UPSO and OPSO operation, training, and field maintenance.
- Will be qualified to operate the CNG Truck for gas bypass operations in critical commercial situations, including pressure reduction from 3600 PSI to delivery pressure and potential backfeeding of large main sections.
- Must reside within the service territory.
- Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, confined spaces, and be available for 24-hour emergency call-outs, including weekends and holidays.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
- Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
