Indirect Tax Specialist – JLL

Location: Chicago

What this job involves:

Join JLL's Tax department as an Indirect Tax Specialist and play a vital role in advancing our tax compliance operations through the strategic integration of technology and process optimization. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of tax compliance and innovation, collaborating directly with our Tax Technology team to build customized solutions that enhance efficiency and scale with our global growth. You'll manage critical indirect tax functions across multiple jurisdictions while actively contributing to process improvements that leverage cutting-edge technology, including AI-powered tools. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented tax professional who is eager to expand their technical skillset and make a measurable impact on how JLL approaches indirect tax compliance in an evolving business landscape.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Lead monthly sales tax processing activities, including reviewing US repair and maintenance services subject to sales tax, filing various sales tax returns, and serving as a resource for business colleagues on sales tax inquiries using industry research databases.
  • Collaborate with the Tax Technology team to design, build, and implement customized solutions for recurring indirect tax compliance, including account reconciliation, standardized input/output processes for tax filings, and diagnostic and analytical reporting.
  • Prepare and submit periodic gross receipts tax filings throughout the year, including the allocation of charges among business lines and client accounts to ensure accurate compliance.
  • Manage personal property tax compliance during peak season (February-March) by preparing and submitting valuation information, verifying assessment accuracy, processing check requests, and completing required forms.
  • Complete business license renewal applications for existing and new office locations throughout the year, coordinating form completion, payment processing, and signature procurement.
  • Oversee unclaimed property compliance during the August-October filing season, dedicating substantial time to preparing filings for states where Jones Lang LaSalle has remittance obligations.
  • Respond promptly to inquiries and requests from taxing authorities regarding compliance matters, and complete monthly reconciliations of various tax-related balance sheet accounts.
  • Partner with the Senior Indirect Tax Manager and Tax Technology team to identify, design, and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency, leverage available technology tools (including AI), and position the function to scale with company growth.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm, with at least 1-2 years of hands-on experience working with sales & use tax or other indirect taxes.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field.
  • Strong tax technical skills, including demonstrated ability to use various tax research tools (e.g., Thompson Reuters Checkpoint, Avalara Tax Research) to address complex indirect tax issues.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience with tax technology platforms such as Avalara, Microsoft Power Platform, or Alteryx.
  • Strong analytical capabilities with proven ability to review existing processes, identify inefficiencies, and recommend appropriate changes or improvements to increase team effectiveness.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with strong orientation to numerical information and general familiarity with accounting principles and balance sheet reconciliation.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly explain technical tax concepts to non-tax audiences, including business partners and colleagues across the organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in accountancy or professional accounting credential (CPA, EA) in progress or completed.
  • Prior experience with the Microsoft Power Platform (Power BI, Power Automate, Power Apps) or workflow automation tools.
  • Familiarity with Alteryx or similar data preparation and analytics platforms.
  • Previous exposure to unclaimed property compliance or personal property tax processes.
  • Experience working in a real estate, professional services, or property management environment.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies in tax, including AI-powered compliance tools and machine learning applications in tax operations.
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully leading or contributing to process improvement initiatives or technology implementation projects.
