The opportunity

Our ambition is to become market leader in the Renewable Energy Insurance Sector. This has led to an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Underwriter Energy, based in our Madrid office in the Torre de Cristal.

Reporting into the Head of Energy Europe, you will be responsible for generating and underwriting new business in the Engineering & Construction sector, with a focus on Renewable Energy. You will engage with brokers and clients in the region of Southern Europe region while also assisting in other European countries. Your role will be key in maintaining these relationships and providing a market leading service. Initial areas of focus will be; Onshore Wind Energy, Solar Photo-voltaic Energy, Mini Hydro and BESS.


What you’ll be doing

  • Underwriting and growing the Energy and Construction book of business profitably within the risk appetite
  • Establishing, developing, and expanding broker and customer relationships
  • Underwriting Construction projects (EAR, CAR) and Energy business while ensuring appropriate analysis and documentation.
  • Extending and consolidating our footprint as a recognized insurance partner by assessing, proposing, and negotiating insurance conditions for large and midsize projects, with a primary focus on Renewable Energy.
  • Working closely with local teams, clients and brokers.
  • Assessing risks, coverage, terms, and conditions, driving related underwriting processes, and ensuring appropriate risk management when in a lead position.
  • Acting as a point of reference on technical issues in the region within the global Engineering and Construction community and staying updated on new technologies and market trends
  • Contributing to the development of marketing strategies for the region
  • Supporting the growth of associated lines of business by actively cross-selling the capabilities and contributing to the development of tailored solutions for clients' needs
  • Developing the Underwriting strategy, guidelines, standards, processes and tools to support this goal
  • Managing the referral business with Underwriting authority
  • Supporting the team in managing CAT accumulation, reinsurance interaction and treaty renewal

Our must-haves

  • A degree in Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years engineering underwriting experience in the Renewable Energy sector
  • Validated experience as a project engineer, including testing/commissioning responsibilities of large renewable projects
  • Strong broker and client network
  • Good understanding of natural catastrophe peril modelling and pricing for multi-year construction policies
  • Experience and strong understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscripts
  • Experience marketing to specialized brokers.
  • Phenomenal communicator, skilled in negotiation, communications, and presentation
  • Strong analytical skills and high proficiency in common IT applications.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, delegate where necessary and make quick decisions while maintaining integrity and profitability
  • Effective interpersonal skills as you collaborate with local and regional partners, as well as internal colleagues, across Spain and Europe
  • Proficiency in Spanish and English. Additional knowledge of Italian, or Portuguese an advantage.
