OB/GYN Ultrasound Technologist – Maternal‑Fetal Medicine (MFM)

The OB/GYN Ultrasound Technologist performs advanced obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound examinations for physician interpretation to support accurate diagnosis and patient care. This role requires specialized experience in Maternal‑Fetal Medicine, including high‑risk obstetrical imaging, fetal anatomy surveys, and detailed growth and Doppler studies. The technologist performs all functions of an Ultrasound Technologist with an emphasis on OB/GYN and MFM protocols.

Job Responsibilities

Participates in orientation and ongoing education and training of ultrasound staff, with emphasis on OB/GYN and MFM best practices.

  1. Serves as a clinical resource for complex or high‑risk OB/GYN and MFM sonographic examinations.
  2. Prepares patients for obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound examinations; positions patients according to departmental protocols and exam type. Explains procedures clearly and compassionately to reduce patient anxiety, particularly in high‑risk pregnancy situations.
  3. Reviews pertinent medical history, prior imaging, and diagnostic reports to ensure appropriate correlation with the scheduled OB/GYN or MFM ultrasound examination.
  4. Consults with referring physicians and MFM specialists regarding patient history and exam indications to determine the appropriate imaging protocol.
  5. Prepares and operates ultrasound equipment for a variety of OB/GYN and MFM examinations, applying advanced technical judgment to optimize image quality and diagnostic accuracy.
  6. Performs routine and advanced ultrasound procedures, including but not limited to:
    • First, second, and third trimester obstetrical exams
    • Detailed fetal anatomy surveys
    • Fetal growth assessments
    • Biophysical profiles
    • Cervical length evaluations
    • Amniotic fluid assessments
    • Umbilical artery and fetal Doppler studies
    • Gynecologic pelvic ultrasounds
  7. Accurately identifies normal anatomy, variants, and pathological findings, and distinguishes artifacts from clinically significant findings.
  8. Determines when additional imaging views or extended evaluations are required beyond standard protocols and escalates findings appropriately.
  9. Continuously monitors patient condition throughout the exam and promptly reports any adverse reactions or clinical concerns in accordance with departmental procedures.
  10. Documents examinations thoroughly, including accurate labeling of images, measurements, and worksheets in accordance with MFM and regulatory standards.
  11. Performs routine quality assurance, calibration checks, and basic troubleshooting of ultrasound equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  12. Performs related duties as required. All responsibilities listed are considered essential functions of the job under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Job Qualifications

  • Technical School Diploma required
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification required (OB/GYN specialty preferred)
  • 3–5 years of ultrasound experience, with documented Maternal‑Fetal Medicine (MFM) experience required
  • Strong knowledge of OB/GYN and high‑risk obstetrical ultrasound protocols
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with physicians, MFM specialists, and clinical staff
