Job Description

Savannah River National Laboratory is seeking an established expert in environmental tritium metrology to join our team as an S4 Scientist. The successful candidate will serve as the subject matter expert for our existing environmental tritium laboratory. This role involves a broad range of responsibilities, including the collection of environmental samples, the separation and handling of tritium in its various molecular forms, and the quantitative measurement of tritium.

The ideal candidate will not only maintain and lead the current laboratory operations but also drive innovation by developing new technologies and approaches. This position offers the opportunity to participate in a variety of other scientific endeavors across the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for the environmental tritium laboratory.
  • Oversee and conduct the collection, separation, and handling of environmental samples containing tritium.
  • Perform quantitative measurements of tritium using various techniques.
  • Develop and implement innovative technologies and methodologies to advance laboratory capabilities.
  • Collaborate on interdisciplinary scientific projects within the laboratory.
  • Ensure all laboratory activities are conducted safely and in compliance with regulatory standards.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated expertise in environmental tritium metrology.
  • Broad skills in collecting environmental samples.
  • Proficiency in separating and handling tritium in its various molecular forms.
  • Experience with quantitative tritium measurement techniques.
  • Specific, highly desirable experience in:
  • Adsorption
  • Gas chemistry
  • Gas proportional counting
  • A strong foundation in nuclear physics, radiation detection, chemical engineering, and environmental science is highly beneficial.
  • Strongly Recommended that they have a history of interaction with sponsors to develop new work.
  • Strongly Recommended that this person be willing to mentor new and junior staff members, both programmatically and technically.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree and 10-12 years of relevant experience, or a MS + 9-11 yrs; or a PhD + 8-10 yrs.
  • For ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, US Citizenship is Legally Required
  • A Ph.D. in a relevant scientific or engineering field is typically recommended, but not required, for an S4-level position at SRNL, along with a significant record of research and development accomplishments. The S4 designation represents a senior scientific role, and candidates are expected to have a national reputation in their field.
