What is the opportunity?

Join RBC’s multi-disciplinary Corporate Treasury team, which analyzes, manages, and hedges interest rate, FX, capital, funding, and liquidity risks inherent in RBC’s diverse and sizable non-trading balance sheet and related securities portfolios. This dynamic rotational role focuses on Asset Liability Management (ALM) skills development, via responsibility for supporting a variety of ALM activities including risk analytics, risk measurement & reporting, transfer pricing, and transaction execution. The role maintains and enhances existing processes, develops new insights, and advances automation, while collaborating with Treasury, Finance, and Line of Business partners.

The Associates will complete four 6-month rotations within RBC Corporate Treasury.

The measurement and management of non-trading market risk across RBC’s retail, commercial, and wealth businesses; The measurement and management of liquidity across all of the RBC, including liquidity measurement, investment portfolio management, and wholesale funding activities; The measurement and management of capital and all capital ratios across all of RBC; and Maintaining a robust and complete funds transfer pricing framework used to price products according to their risk characteristics and value to the RBC franchise.

What will you do?

  • Support comprehensive management and measurement of non-trading market risk across a variety of RBC businesses including linear and non-linear products, deposit behaviour modeling, customer pipeline behaviour, and other areas requiring quantitative risk analytics.
  • Maintain and improve processes that support RBC’s leadership in balance sheet management, complemented by a deep understanding of retail, derivative, and investment products.
  • Develop ALM skills in three core areas comprising: interest rate risk; balance sheet modelling and infrastructure; and funds transfer pricing. Complete an additional rotation with exposure to one or more of: execution of derivatives to manage non-trading market risk; management of the HQLA securities portfolio; liquidity risk analytics / management; balance sheet optimization; capital management; management of RBC’s long-term funding / securitization program; etc.
  • Develop and execute processes and analytics to understand and evaluate balance sheet positions, ALM strategies, forecasts, and P&L outcome drivers. Participate in what-if analysis, evaluation of risk, and understanding of results.
  • Assist in maintenance, documentation, development, and / or production of technology-based solutions, including identification of required improvements, solutioning around challenges, and implementation of new / revised methodologies, as required.
  • Work independently and think strategically, to drive priorities and improvements.
  • Take initiative on automation and efficiencies. Leverage data and product knowledge to develop and provide new insights and analytics, and resolve issues.
  • This role provides a unique opportunity to gain exposure to multiple activities, products, and geographies within the footprint of a large and complex global bank, with a core ALM view.

What do you need to succeed?

Must have:

  • Recent / new Master’s program grad with a focus on quantitative or mathematical finance.
  • Strong understanding of financial principles, pricing models, financial engineering, and risk concepts, particularly in relation to fixed income products.
  • Team player and self-starter, able to manage own schedule and priorities to deadlines.
  • Strong ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, complex concepts to a non-technical, senior audience.
  • Ability to tailor analysis to required level of precision (i.e. 80/20 solutions, or attend to details, as needed).
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Visio, etc.).

Nice-to-have:

  • Prior work experience, including relevant prior part-time / student roles & projects.
  • Prior exposure to banking book products, accounting and / or regulations.
  • Strong technical skills (e.g., Python, SQL, automation & data solutions).
  • Challenges status quo, deals effectively with ambiguity, and is able to influence and persuade.
