Job Description

The Barrick Africa Middle East Team at North Mara Mine is seeking an experienced Senior Tradesman – Welding / QAQC on a 2-year fixed-term contract.

This is a 2-year fixed-term contract role, 8 weeks on / 4 weeks off rotation. Sub-standard weld quality has been identified as a primary driver of the chronic temporary repair cycle and repeat structural failures across the North Mara fleet — including active chassis cracks on haul trucks. The primary mandate of this role is structured skills transfer and quality uplift of the national welding and fabrication workforce. The successful candidate will combine hands-on QAQC execution and structural repair oversight with a genuine commitment to mentoring, coaching, and building a sustainable local welding capability by the end of the contract term.

Join our exceptional team and embody Barrick's core values as you work with us. We are in search of individuals who can champion Barrick's DNA by:

  • Communicating Honestly, Transparently, and Acting with Integrity.

  • Exhibiting a Results-Driven approach.

  • Delivering solutions that are Fit for Purpose.

  • Dedicating themselves to Building a Sustainable Legacy.

  • Taking Responsibility and being Accountable.

  • Committing to Zero Harm.

  • Cultivating strong and meaningful Partnerships.

If you're ready to contribute to our world-class team while embracing these values, we encourage you to apply and become a valued member of our diverse workforce.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all Barrick health, safety, and environmental policies, procedures, and the Mines Health & Safety Act; visibly lead by example on Zero Harm.

  • Deliver a structured, formal welding and fabrication training programme to develop national tradespeople to a professional, certified standard — this is the primary KPI of the role.

  • Lead, supervise, mentor, and coach the national welding team on all tasks, ensuring skills are progressively transferred throughout the contract term.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor QAQC plans, inspection protocols, and repair work scopes for all structural welding on the North Mara HME fleet, aligned to AWS D1.1, ISO standards, and Barrick standards.

  • Be present for and oversee all structural repairs — including haul truck chassis repairs, excavator front attachments, shovel buckets, and loader structures — providing real-time quality assurance throughout execution.

  • Develop comprehensive repair work scopes for structural weld repairs, including step-by-step procedures, weld specifications, consumables, hold points, quality checklists, and photographic documentation.

  • Conduct rigorous inspections of completed welding repairs; coordinate non-destructive testing (NDT) where required; review and approve inspection reports before sign-off.

  • Conduct root cause failure analysis (RCFA) on structural failures; lead Pareto analysis of repeat weld failures and implement corrective strategies to break the temporary repair cycle.

  • Perform and oversee all welding processes: electric arc, MIG, TIG, gouging, oxy-acetylene, and hard-facing on all HME structural components.

  • Conduct pre-handover inspections on repaired or new assets, ensuring they meet Barrick quality standards before acceptance.

  • Maintain accurate SAP PM work orders, QAQC documentation, and inspection records.

  • Manage welding consumables, equipment calibration, and pre-heat/inter-pass temperature compliance.

  • Support planning activities by providing accurate feedback on work progress and resource requirements.

  • Promote high standards of housekeeping, safety, and environmental awareness in the workshop.

  • Perform any additional duties as required by your supervisor.

Qualification requirements

  • Boilermaker or Metal Fabrication Trade Certificate from a recognised institution — required.

  • IIW International Welding Inspector (IWI-C or IWI-S), CSWIP Welding Inspector, or equivalent certification — required.

  • ISO 14731 Welding Coordination Qualification or AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code knowledge — required.

  • Computer literacy: SAP, Microsoft Office Suite — required.

  • Valid driver’s licence.

Experience and competencies needed.

  • Minimum 8–10 years’ experience as a boilermaker/welder on heavy mobile mining equipment in an open cut production environment.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting QAQC inspections and managing welding quality on HME structural components — required.

  • Proven experience developing and managing comprehensive repair work scopes for structural weld repairs to international standards.

  • Specific experience with CAT 777E/785C haul truck body and chassis repairs, including crack assessment and structural remediation — required.

  • Experience with excavator bucket rebuilds, front attachment repairs (CAT 6020B/395), and loader structural repairs.

  • Demonstrated experience delivering structured welding skills transfer and training to national teams in a cross-cultural mining environment — required.

  • Sound knowledge of welding metallurgy, pre-heat requirements, consumable selection, and distortion control.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of electric arc, MIG/TIG, gouging, hard-facing, and structural steel fabrication.

  • Good working knowledge of SAP PM and CMMS work order management.

  • Medical fitness for the mining environment.

What We Can Offer You

  • A comprehensive compensation package including bonuses and site-specific benefits.

  • The opportunity to make a real and lasting difference in North Mara's HME OC Maintenance turnaround.

  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team.

  • Structured training, mentoring, and career development opportunities.

  • Access to a variety of career opportunities across the Barrick group.
