Job Description

Senior Test Systems Design and Analysis Engineer

Company:

The Boeing Company

Boeing Space, Intelligence & Weapons Systems is currently hiring multiple Entry-Level, Associate Test Systems Design and Analysis Engineers (STE) to join us as part of our Special Test Equipment for Space Electronics team located in El Segundo, CA.

The Special Test Equipment (STE) team at The Boeing Company's Satellite Development Center in El Segundo, California is seeking all levels of Electrical Engineers with skills and familiarity in Power/Digital and RF/Mixed Signal Systems for Space Applications. Our team is a critical part of Boeing's mission, ensuring the reliability and performance of advanced space electronics through the design, development, and validation of state-of-the-art testing equipment. Our engineers work on a variety of space-grade electronics, from power and digital subsystems to RF/mixed signal systems. The STE team is responsible for the cradle-to-grave design, build, validation, and support of the specialized test equipment that ensures these flight products and systems perform as intended in their extreme operating environments.

The Special Test Equipment (STE) team plays a pivotal role in the realization of Boeing's groundbreaking space initiatives, but also supports the entirety of the Boeing Defense and Security product line and even some Boeing Commercial Aviation products. As part of our collective efforts, you will contribute to diverse projects ranging from cutting-edge satellite communication systems to advanced exploration ventures. Your expertise will have a direct impact on crucial missions, such as the development of the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) system - a high capacity satellite communications system for the United States Defense Department, and many more space and defense-based missions! Moreover, your contribution will not be limited to Earth's orbit. We also conduct interplanetary missions, like the Lunar Gateway - a small spaceship in orbit around the moon that astronauts will use as a staging point for lunar surface expeditions and trips to Mars.

In the ever-evolving arena of space technology, the STE team will also participate in research and development initiatives focusing on futuristic technologies such as advanced propulsion systems, spaceborne telescopes, and spacecraft for asteroid mining and space-based solar power systems. Joining our team means not only contributing to tangible space missions but also shaping the future of space exploration. Here at Boeing, you're not just starting a job; you're advancing your career in ways that will align with your aspirations and passions. It's more than a place to work; it's a place to fulfil your potential and passion for space technology.

Position Responsibilities

(All engineers will participate and work within the below scope of work appropriate to their technical capabilities)

  • Define software architecture and lead development of test automation frameworks, instrument control layers, and data acquisition/processing pipelines used across STE platforms.

  • Develop, maintain, and validate instrument drivers and device interfaces for common electronic test equipment (oscilloscopes, network analyzers, power supplies, DAQs, Loads, PXI Chassis, etc.).

  • Implement test sequences, automated test stations, and data logging using C#, LabVIEW, TestStand, Python, and/or MATLAB as appropriate for the project.

  • Integrate and orchestrate different test assets (GPIB/USB/LXI/SCPI/IVI/TCP-IP) into cohesive systems with robust error handling, synchronization, and timing considerations.

  • Design and implement modular, maintainable, and testable software components informed by sound SW architecture principles (layering, abstraction, dependency injection, CI/CD, unit/integration testing).

  • Build user interfaces and operator tools (desktop GUIs, dashboards, command‑line utilities) to enable technicians and test engineers to execute and monitor tests efficiently.

  • Work closely with hardware engineers to define APIs and mechanical/electrical interfaces, and to ensure software accounts for physical constraints, safety interlocks, and factory/test-floor workflows.

  • Lead hands‑on lab integration: deploy software to test benches, exercise instruments, capture data, and troubleshoot system-level anomalies together with the multidisciplinary team.

  • Implement automated data analysis, reporting, and pass/fail criteria for test campaigns; store and manage test results and metadata using version control and PLM/PDM integration where required.

  • Use and extend build/test infrastructure (source control like SVN/Git, issue tracking, CI tools) to support reproducible builds, automated testing, and release processes.

  • Create and maintain documentation: architecture diagrams, API docs, test procedures, maintenance guides, and technician work instructions.

  • Recommend and evaluate procurement of software tools, instrument drivers, and middleware to ensure reliable test operations.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This worksite participates in Boeing’s optional 9/80 schedule rotation. 9/80 is a rotation in which employees can work 9 hour shifts, 8 days per pay period (bi-weekly) and receive every other Friday off.

Travel may be required up to 10% of the time; Domestically depending on business needs.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus in Electrical, Mechanical or Aeronautical), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement

  • Strong software architecture skills with experience designing modular, scalable test systems and frameworks.

  • Proficiency with C# and strong experience developing production-grade test/control software.

  • Experience with LabVIEW and TestStand for test sequencing and instrumentation automation.

  • Experience developing instrument drivers and instrument control using SCPI/GPIB/LXI/IVI interfaces.

  • Hands‑on familiarity with common electronic test equipment and test cases for power/digital and RF/mixed‑signal systems.

  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, or similar for data analysis, signal processing, and automation scripting.

  • Strong software engineering practices: source control (SVN/Git), unit/integration testing, CI/CD, code reviews, and documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering

  • Knowledge of electronics concepts (control, analog, digital, power supply behavior) sufficient to collaborate effectively with electrical engineers and interpret test results.

  • Experience designing automated test systems for power/digital and RF/mixed signal systems.

  • Prior experience developing software for test programs and exposure to configuration control/PLM processes.

  • Knowledge and experience in control, analog, digital, or power supply circuit design.

  • Proven troubleshooting experience in lab environments such as diagnosing software, instrument, and integration issues during test execution.
