Job Description

Senior Security Technical Specialist

  • Permanent, full‑time position
  • Flexible, hybrid working environment
  • A senior, hands‑on role reviewing and configuring security platforms and controls at scale

At AustralianSuper, we truly care about our colleagues. We know work and life are intertwined. That’s why we support the diverse needs of everyone and have policies that enable us all to thrive and be truly flexible. We ensure diversity is celebrated for the opportunity it provides us all to learn and grow and deliver better outcomes for members.

Your New Role

Are you a security engineer who enjoys building, improving and automating security platforms in complex environments?

Reporting to the Manager, Security Operations, the Senior Security Technical Specialist is responsible for reviewing and maintaining the technical security platforms and controls that safeguard member data and money across the Fund.

This role is deeply hands‑on and engineering‑led. You’ll work across cloud security, endpoint protection, data loss prevention, application security and DevSecOps technologies, ensuring protective measures remain effective, scalable and fit for purpose. A strong focus of the role is using automation, scripting and emerging technologies (including AI) to reduce security exposure and improve operational efficiency.

You’ll collaborate closely with technologists across Technology Services to ensure security designs align to agreed engineering patterns, standards and governance — while continuously improving the Fund’s preventative security posture.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build and maintain security technology platforms and technical controls across cloud, endpoint, network, application and data security domains.
  • Develop automation, tooling and scripts (using Python and PowerShell) to support cyber defence, investigations and incident response.
  • Maintain and drive improvement roadmaps for security platforms and controls.
  • Analyse the Fund’s preventative security posture, identifying gaps and recommending practical improvements.
  • Identify emerging threats, countermeasures and technologies to reduce the Fund’s risk profile
  • Collaborate with Security Enablement and Technology teams, contributing to ITIL processes such as incident and change management

What You’ll Need

Whilst we don’t expect you to tick every box, but you’re likely to bring most of the following:

  • Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in technical security or security platform engineering roles
  • Strong scripting and automation capability, particularly in Python and PowerShell
  • Hands‑on experience across cloud security platforms (ideally Microsoft Azure Security), endpoint security, data loss prevention (e.g. Purview) and application security.
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, firewall principles)
  • Experience managing application security vulnerabilities (GitHub Advanced Security highly regarded)
  • Strong background in vulnerability management, patching processes and vulnerability scanning
  • Experience with identity and access management, authentication protocols and role‑based access control
  • Cloud technology experience and/or relevant certifications

Other really useful skills and experience to have, could include:

  • Cyber security certifications or formal IT qualifications
  • Experience securing AI systems, particularly within Microsoft ecosystems
  • Experience implementing AI‑based risk mitigation approaches
  • Experience with hardening standards and CIS benchmarks
  • Strong understanding of the contemporary threat landscape and common countermeasures
  • Experience operating in large, complex IT environments
