Job Description

Welcome to HotDoc!

Founded in Melbourne, Australia in 2012, HotDoc is Australia's largest patient engagement platform, with over 14 million patient accounts in Australia.

The past 18 months have seen massive growth for our business, our team, and our community. We now work with over 24,000 practitioners around Australia, including GPs, Allied Health, Dental Practices, Specialists, and Optometrists.

We have ambitious goals to improve the patient experience for everyone in Australia through exceptional journeys managed on our platform, and we're looking for extraordinary people to help us get there.

The Role

Reporting to the VP of Product, you'll lead product for our Core Services and Infrastructure team — the squad that keeps HotDoc running and builds the foundations everything else depends on. Your team includes SRE, security, and senior backend engineers.

You'll own the foundational roadmap: reliability, security, tech debt, and platform capabilities that let our growth squads move faster. You'll also ship the occasional customer-facing feature — integrations, API capabilities, and product uplifts that don't fit neatly into our growth pillars.

This role sits at the intersection of technical depth and product thinking. Your internal customers matter as much as external ones. You'll need to be comfortable in ambiguity, skilled at discovery, and able to make the case for foundational work alongside more visible initiatives.

What We’re Looking For

This is a role for someone who is AI-first — not AI-curious, but already living it. You reach for AI as a default across discovery, analysis, prototyping, and spec-writing. You're also exceptional in ambiguity: you can take a messy, contested backlog, create clarity and structure, and bring engineers and executives along with you.

Why Join HotDoc?

HotDoc's platform function is at an exciting inflection point. We've grown rapidly and now need someone to bring structure, prioritisation, and product thinking to the foundational work that underpins everything we do.

This is a chance to own a critical part of our technical strategy, work closely with some of our most experienced engineers, and have a direct impact on platform reliability and capability. You'll have autonomy to shape the roadmap, the trust to make prioritisation calls, and the support of a product and engineering leadership team that understands the value of foundational work.

You'll thrive here if you enjoy working in the engine room rather than the shopfront, and if you're energised by the challenge of making a mature and complex platform simpler, more reliable, and more capable.

What Will You Be Doing?

  1. Work with Technology and Product leadership to set the vision and strategy for the squad.
  2. Own and evolve the roadmap for the Core Services and Infrastructure team, balancing reliability, security, tech debt, legislative responses, and new platform capabilities.
  3. Lead discovery into the areas that need prioritisation most by collaborating with engineers, the Engineering Manager, and the wider Product and Engineering org.
  4. Translate complex technical work into clear business value, ensuring stakeholders understand why foundational work matters and how it enables HotDoc's growth.
  5. Partner closely with Staff Engineers and the Engineering Manager to ensure the platform architecture is scalable, reliable, and maintainable.
  6. Manage delivery of the roadmap through backlog prioritisation, sprint planning, and continuous value delivery.
  7. Ship customer-facing features such as integrations, API work, and JFDI product uplifts that fall outside the growth squads.
  8. Champion an AI-driven product development lifecycle — using AI tools for research, analysis, prototyping, and delivery as a default, and helping the squad adopt and adapt these practices over time.
  9. Act as the subject matter expert for your domain, communicating technical decisions, progress, and risks clearly to leadership.

Must-Haves

  • 5+ years in product management with an engineering background, focused on technical/platform/infrastructure products
  • 3+ years working with platform or infrastructure teams where your customers are other engineering teams
  • Able to hold your own in architecture discussions with staff engineers — reasoning about system trade-offs without needing to write production code
  • Proven track record delivering a technical product roadmap end-to-end
  • Experience balancing competing demands: tech debt, reliability, security, and new capabilities
  • Comfortable managing third-party vendor relationships, commercially and technically
  • AI-first by instinct — you actively use AI tools in your daily work
  • Strong communicator who can translate complex technical work into clear business value

Bonus: Healthcare tech experience; reliability tooling (SLOs/observability); API/payments platforms; hands-on AI/ML integration.

You're Just the Person We're Looking For If You Can Demonstrate That

  • You've spent meaningful time hands-on as an engineer (or in a deeply technical role) before moving into product — you understand how software is designed, built, and operated from the inside.
  • You are curious about how systems work and genuinely enjoy technical problem-solving.
  • You are AI-first by instinct — you actively explore and adopt AI tools in your own work and are excited about helping teams do the same.
  • You thrive in ambiguity — you can take a contested, messy problem space and bring clarity, structure, and a defensible path forward.
  • A desire to contribute to positive change in the Australian healthcare patient experience.
  • A commitment to doing the right thing by others.
  • Proactive approach to problem-solving, with a willingness to take ownership and see solutions through to completion.
  • Confidence to challenge the status quo and advocate for thoughtful, constructive change.
  • Genuine passion for technology, particularly in healthtech and SaaS, with an interest in leveraging it for meaningful impact.
