Job Description

Role purpose

This role will have primary responsibility for Hong Kong (HK) profits tax, domestic minimum tax and HK employment tax. The role will be based in HK and report to the Head of Regional Tax Reporting and Head of HK Tax within the broader Asia and Middle East tax team.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Key areas of responsibility including corporate tax reporting and compliance matters for in-scope HK entities, overall HK domestic minimum tax compliance and governance, and related reporting. Role includes working with other tax team members in relation to their HK tax compliance responsibilities for other HK entities.
  • Contact point for Controllership colleagues in Financial Control and colleagues in FinOps to support their reporting of material tax issues arising as part of financial reporting process, including review and challenge the tax numbers they booked for in-scope HK entities
  • Responsibility for identifying and review and challenge in relation to Uncertain Tax Positions reporting for in-scope HK entities (in the reporting portal where appropriate).
  • Responsible for tax reporting, financial forecasts and stress tests for in-scope HK entities
  • Responsible for briefing Regional tax reporting team, before and after quarter-end reporting activities to enable them to discharge their own responsibilities, including in relation to reporting to external auditors.
  • Oversee tax payments, and correspondence with the Inland Revenue Department, including enquiries and audits
  • Liaison with business tax teams on relevant business matters impacting in-scope HK entities
  • Liaison with country tax teams on relevant matters impacting in-scope HK entities
  • Second line responsibilities for HK employment tax matters, including subject matter expertise (either directly or sourced externally)
  • Contact point for other teams requiring tax assistance in relation to in-scope HK entities, including Treasury, etc.
  • Support to Head of Regional Tax Reporting and Head of HK Tax on any other tasks within the Asia and Middle East tax team as required

Governance and Committee Attendance

  • Expected to support those governance obligations as they relate to HK profits tax, domestic minimum tax and HK employment tax

Accountabilities for Business, Customers and Stakeholders

  • Accountable to Head of Regional Tax Reporting and Head of HK Tax

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Needs to be expert in collaboration and co-ordination with colleagues, without formal structure in place to do so
  • Potential for leadership development, including engagement with a developing offshore team
  • Open attitude. Flexible to embrace any other tax work which may be included in the portfolio of work from time to time

Functional Knowledge

  • Qualified professional with significant tax experience, ideally gained from top tier advisory or large financial institutions
  • Significant prior work experience and knowledge on HK profits tax, domestic minimum tax and / or international tax matters
  • Substantial knowledge of IFRS tax accounting standards, including in relation to IFRIC 23 (Uncertain Tax Positions)
  • HK employment tax knowledge or experience would be an advantage
  • Should be familiar with banking financial operating systems / models and other relevant financial processes and controls
