About MBRYONICS

MBRYONICS is at the forefront of free space optical communications. Our product portfolio covers a wide range of emerging technologies from photonic integrated circuits to advanced optical systems and embedded software solutions. Our optical communications systems are integrated and deployed in satellite communications systems. The work is exciting and challenging and is at the forefront of the technology domains. As part of our expansion, we are currently looking for a suitably motivated - Senior Systems Engineer- to join our group.

Senior Systems engineer role working with MBRYONICS to bring the next generation of Free Space Optics (FSO) into reality. As a Senior Systems engineer you will manage complex, interdisciplinary requirements, enabling MBRYONICS to deliver high-performance and flight-ready hardware.

The role:

  • Develop and execute design and validation plans for complex hardware and software systems
  • Design, develop, and execute test cases to validate system functionality, performance, reliability, and usability
  • Prepare comprehensive reports that clearly communicate design and validation, and analyse the performance and progress against requirements to report any issues
  • Stay up-to-date on industry trends, testing methodologies, and tools, while contributing to the improvement of systems and validation processes and procedures
  • Systems component identification, specification and selection suitable for aerospace/space deployment
  • Specification to relevant ISO/IEC/JEDEC standards, with specific reference to aerospace standards from NASA/ECSS, including inclusion of new and emerging standards.
  • Creation and specification of power and communications link budgets for (sub)systems
  • Development of (sub)systems from prototype to aerospace-qualified products
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary mechanical, embedded, photonic and optical teams to design for mechanically and thermally constrained environments with strict optical requirements
  • Support and systems development for Design for Manufacture
  • Liaise with sponsors, contractors, satellite bus manufacturers, and sub-contractors for requirements collection and design specification and conformance.
  • Documentation and review of design, test & validation of (sub)system designs
  • Specification and verification of complex systems for tenders and bids, and on-going projects.
  • Willingness to participate with design engineering and test teams across diverse range of disciplines

Who you are

  • Senior-level design experience in space, software, aerospace, or defense sectors.
  • Significant proven industry experience with a track record of delivering successful space, aerospace missions or other regulated industry environments.
  • Experience of ECSS/NASA standards and their practical application throughout the integration and validation phases.
  • Advanced familiarity with Agile development methodologies and leadership within a SCRUM framework.
  • Expertise in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and the application of complex model simulation tools.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python or other scripting/software environments to automate validation and verify complex concepts.
  • Comprehensive experience with high-end design and manufacturing test equipment/systems.

Desirable

  • Subject matter expertise in radiation-hardened component selection, derating, and space-grade custody practices.
  • Advanced capability in developing complex electrical, thermal, and noise models.
  • Direct experience leading satellite integration and environmental testing (TVAC, Vibration, EMI/EMC).
  • Leadership experience within ISO 9000 or similar high-reliability quality assurance environments.
  • Strategic knowledge of Design for Manufacture and assembly at scale.
  • High-level understanding of software inter-networking and distributed systems design.
  • Expert-level familiarity with engineering software (e.g., ANSYS, Altium, Zemax, Simulink) and orbital design tools (e.g., STK, Matlab, Basilisk).
  • Proven technical leadership

About MBRYONICS

MBRYONICS designs, engineers, and manufactures optical payloads (optical communications and photonics) and optical ground stations for next generation extremely high throughput hybrid Optical/RF satellite systems, optical mesh networks, optical relays, and autonomous optical sensor networks for high precision space domain awareness.

We specialise in both the design and MAIT of optical and photonics systems for industrialised series production. MBRYONICS is pioneering the use of and industrialisation of FreeForm optics and photonic integrated circuits for space systems, including inter-satellite communications, optical feeder links, intra-satellite communications (analogue/digital) and microwave photonics applications.

We have nearly two decades of experience in research and development on some of the most challenging photonics and optics projects, finding cost effective solutions to new technical challenges. We regularly collaborate and consult with teams that need photonics and optics engineering, design and manufacturing AIT expertise, from early stage path finding to industrial production. Collaborating closely to identify the key problems and opportunities while bringing our years of experience to the table from a multidisciplinary team.
