Senior System Engineer (Linux – Network – Storage) – Freelance

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior System Engineer to join the IT Operations team of a major public sector organization. In this role, you will be responsible for the setup, management, and optimization of critical IT infrastructure, with a strong focus on Linux environments, complemented by networking and storage technologies.

You will work within a specialized team managing enterprise-scale systems, ensuring stability, performance, and continuous improvement of the infrastructure landscape.

Your Responsibilities

• 
  Manage and maintain Linux-based systems in an enterprise environment
• 
  Develop and maintain automation scripts (Bash, Python, Perl)
• 
  Implement and manage configuration management using Ansible
• 
  Work with Kubernetes and containerized environments
• 
  Handle day-to-day operations monitoring, backups, incident resolution
• 
  Design and implement system changes, upgrades, and new environments
• 
  Support and maintain network and storage infrastructure
• 
  Contribute to infrastructure optimization and automation
• 
  Collaborate with internal teams and support ITIL-based processes
• 
  Participate in datacenter operations when required

Your Profile

Must-Have

• 
  Minimum 5 years' experience in:
  • 
    Linux system administration (preferably SUSE Linux Enterprise Server)
  • 
    Linux scripting (Bash, Python, Perl)
  • 
    System administration (setup, maintenance, operations)
• 
  Experience with Ansible configuration management
• 
  Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and containers (enterprise level)
• 
  Broad knowledge of IT infrastructure (systems, networking, or security)
• 
  Dutch proficiency at CEFR level C2

Nice to Have

• 
  Experience with monitoring tools (Elastic, Nagios)
• 
  Knowledge of virtualization (VMware ESX or similar)
• 
  Experience with network technologies (Cisco ACI, Palo Alto, F5, Barracuda)
• 
  Experience with enterprise storage (NetApp, HPE Alletra, StoreOnce)
• 
  Familiarity with data platforms (Tibco Data Virtualization, KNIME)
• 
  Experience with ITIL processes and support operations
• 
  Experience in datacenter operations
