Job Description

Motional’s Pittsburgh office is located in the new Hazelwood Green development, a culmination of the city’s goal of restoring an economic driver to the neighborhood in a thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable way. With views along the Monongahela river, the Pittsburgh office is in the heart of this new state of the art development.

Mission Summary:

The SQE position is based at the Pittsburgh Technical Center, Pittsburgh PA, and reports to the Supplier Quality Manager based at the Las Vegas, Nevada Technical Center. Quarterly travel to Supplier manufacturing sites is anticipated (at a minimum).

The SQE will be responsible for executing the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) process with Suppliers selected for potential Generation 3 activities, in addition to pursuing continuous improvement and warranty reduction for the current Generation 2 build. The role involves conducting Program Reviews against established program milestones and escalating issues as necessary. The individual must ensure the supply base adheres to Motional standards, that quality and manufacturing processes are enabled, and that non-conformances are identified and prevented from proceeding to subsequent manufacturing sites. Prompt reaction to and cross-functional resolution of known non-conformances is required.

What you’ll do:

  • Ensure supplier adherence to APQP processes, including product Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) submission and approval requirements.
  • Review and approve supplier quality plans (Control Plans, Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis [PFMEA]) for new components and assemblies essential for vehicle launch.
  • Conduct reviews of supplier manufacturing processes and quality management systems.
  • Facilitate root cause analysis and the implementation of corrective actions for supplier quality issues.
  • Execute on-site supplier visits to conduct root cause analysis and verify the effectiveness of corrective actions related to supplier quality issues.
  • Implement and monitor supplier part qualification and certification processes (PPAP, Run at Rate).
  • Enhance the quality performance of suppliers through on-site workshops, providing technical assistance in developing robust quality systems, or offering other necessary technical support.
  • Provide technical assistance during supplier launch, change-over, and ongoing production activities.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A Bachelor's degree is mandatory. A degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, Manufacturing, Welding, Plastics, Materials, Chemical preferred) or an equivalent Technical Degree such as Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, or Physics is acceptable.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in quality, engineering, and/or manufacturing is required.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, performing part measurements, and understanding gage design and function.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Proven knowledge of manufacturing and assembly plant processes, procedures, tooling, equipment, and facilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of probability, statistical quality control, and design of experiments.
  • Proven ability to investigate complex quality problems and apply sound technical judgment to develop effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to concurrently manage multiple projects and lead diverse cross-functional teams.
  • High level of interpersonal skills necessary to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 75% (domestic and international).
  • This position necessitates the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis.

Bonus Points:

  • One or more years of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or Tier 1 experience within automotive quality, manufacturing, or engineering functions, including demonstrated experience and capability in any of the following areas:.
    • Statistical Problem Solving (e.g., Red X, Six Sigma, DMAIC).
    • Product Engineering.
    • Lean Manufacturing and/or Manufacturing Quality.
    • Manufacturing, Process, and/or Tool Engineering.
    • Quality Systems Planning (APQP), including PPAP.

This role is based in our Pittsburgh office and requires in-office days each week.

The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors including but not limited to specific skills, experience and expertise, role location, certifications, licenses, and business needs.
