Job Description

The Team

Cundall is a global engineering consultancy known for innovative and sustainable design across energy, infrastructure and the built environment. With a 50-year history, we deliver projects that shape the future of energy systems, from grid transmission and distribution to renewable energy and critical infrastructure.

Our Power Systems team specialises in high-voltage design, protection and control systems, power system studies and technical advisory services, delivering technically demanding projects in the UK and internationally.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Power Systems Engineer to strengthen our Dublin capability in substation primary design and grid infrastructure. The role is design-led, complementing existing power system studies capability within the team.

You will take a leading role in HV plant and primary design across transmission and distribution substations, grid connections, BESS, renewable energy and critical infrastructure, coordinating closely with P&C, studies and multidisciplinary colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

Primary and HV plant design

  • Lead and undertake primary design for new substations, extensions and upgrades, including AIS/GIS schemes.
  • Develop and review SLDs, substation layouts, equipment plans, technical specifications, plant selection and design calculations.
  • Coordinate HV plant interfaces including transformers, switchgear, busbars, CTs/VTs, auxiliary systems, cables and earthing.

Coordination and delivery

  • Coordinate with P&C, power system studies, civil, structural, cable and other project disciplines.
  • Interpret client and utility requirements and translate them into coordinated engineering deliverables.
  • Represent the Power Systems team in client, utility, contractor and supplier meetings.
  • Undertake site visits, design reviews and constructability assessments as required.

Quality and team

  • Check and review technical deliverables produced by others.
  • Provide coaching and technical support to less experienced engineers.
  • Support project planning, scope control, quality and delivery while contributing to the continued growth of Cundall’s Irish Power Systems capability.

The Skills

Essential Experience and Capabilities

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Strong relevant experience in HV/MV substation primary / plant design.
  • Demonstrable experience producing and reviewing primary substation design deliverables.
  • Good understanding of interfaces with P&C, studies, civils, structures, cables and earthing.
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or demonstrable progress towards an appropriate professional qualification.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with Irish transmission or distribution utility requirements and grid infrastructure.
  • Experience at 110kV, 220kV or 400kV, or comparable transmission voltages in another jurisdiction.
  • Experience of BESS, renewable generation, large grid connections or data-centre power infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of power system studies as a complementary capability.
  • Experience working in consultancy, utility, EPC or OEM environments.

What Success Looks Like

  • Dublin develops stronger in-house primary and HV plant design capability.
  • Substation design packages are coordinated effectively across P&C, studies and multidisciplinary interfaces.
  • Projects receive clear senior technical ownership and timely design decisions.
  • Less experienced engineers receive effective guidance and development.

Why Join Us?

  • Work on technically challenging power and grid infrastructure projects.
  • Develop Cundall’s growing substation design capability while working alongside specialists in primary design, P&C and studies.
  • Work within an integrated multidisciplinary consultancy across energy, BESS, data centres and critical infrastructure.
  • Access flexible working arrangements and structured professional development.
