Our business center operates within Stantec’s Buildings business line and includes expertise in process, mechanical, electrical, piping, and structural disciplines. Our team is based across our Plymouth, MN and downtown Minneapolis, MN offices, with the structural group located in Minneapolis.

We deliver a wide range of projects spanning industrial processes, food and beverage, chemical, industrial agricultural, and general manufacturing sectors. Our work includes retrofit and upgrade projects, brownfield expansions, and full greenfield facility developments. Across all project types, we partner with clients throughout the entire project lifecycle to provide high-quality, reliable design solutions.

In addition to supporting industrial projects, our structural team collaborates with other Stantec groups on a variety of initiatives, including water and wastewater treatment facilities, solid waste transfer stations, public works buildings, and other municipal infrastructure. Like our industrial portfolio, this work includes both new greenfield developments and upgrades or expansions to existing facilities.

As a Senior Structural Engineer at Stantec, you will utilize your skills in leadership, communication, problem solving, design and construction documentation, code analysis and engineering judgment in a fast-paced professional environment. In addition, you will assist in mentoring and guiding other technical professionals in a team environment.

Your Key Responsibilities

As a member of our Structural team, your role covers a wide array of tasks and responsibilities, including technical design and production, project and personnel management, and business development. Briefly, these are summarized below.

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance for project conception, design approach and work production.
  • Perform structural design - produce construction drawings, project manuals, reports, etc.
  • Perform site / facility field assessments.
  • Provide Quality Assurance/Quality Control reviews for work produced by team staff and others
  • Direct other members of structural team on best practices and work production.
  • Oversee structural team project workload
  • Implement and monitor design approach
  • Work with other disciplines and project managers to ensure proper coordination and alignment.
  • Manage and assist others in preparing professional service work scope proposals and estimated design fees.
  • Participate in and develop Team marketing strategies and identify target markets and clients
  • Network with others to develop leads and establish partnerships with internal and external clients.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

To successfully perform and meet the responsibilities of the Senior Structural Engineer position, the following capabilities and credentials are essential:

  • Proven leadership skills that include leading, guiding and directing successful team outcomes
  • Experience and knowledge of structural design and analysis of steel, concrete, masonry structures.
  • Experience and knowledge in construction observation and condition assessment of various building types and construction materials, including concrete, masonry, and steel
  • Requisite knowledge and application of structural design codes, standards, and applicable building codes
  • Perform calculations and utilize structural software/hand calculations for design/analysis of various building materials (steel, concrete, masonry, wood)
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in written form concepts and ideas to a diverse audience of Architects, Engineers, and Owner clients effectively
  • Working knowledge and familiarity with building codes and industry design standards, and related structural design software for industrial facilities and structures, buildings, tanks, above grade and below grade foundations, including deep foundations.
  • Experience with finite-element analysis (FEA) and an understanding of how FEA can be applied to complex structural engineering problems.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills, both written and verbal, along with excellent interpersonal abilities and willingness to work in a team environment and help lead project and proposal efforts.
  • Skill and knowledge to create, suggest, and introduce innovative and effective client solutions.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering required.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E. and/or S.E.) required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience related to Structural Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, is required.
  • Experience with modeling software (Autodesk Revit)
  • Proficient in the use of structural design software such as Tekla TSD, STAAD-Pro, CSI Products, Ram Products, RISA products, or other design software.
  • Must be willing to travel to regional project sites, including some overnight travel.

Typical office environment, working with computers and drawings for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to hazards including construction, weather, and industrial operations that may be experienced at industrial facilities and water and/or wastewater related facilities.

The expectation is that the person selected for this role will work in the Plymouth and/or Minneapolis office and generally will be in the office a minimum of 3 days per week.
