Job Description

GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (GZA) is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to support and grow the waterfront and coastal engineering practice in GZA’s Northeast Offices (Providence, RI preferred) This role offers the opportunity to work on complex and engaging projects in dynamic waterfront and coastal environments, alongside a collaborative team of multi-disciplinary professionals.

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will work with a staff of interrelated professionals dedicated to providing high-level expertise on complex waterfront and coastal infrastructure projects. These projects include assessment and design of rehabilitation and/or replacement of waterfront structures including piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, docks, mooring and berthing systems, and other coastal structures. The position also requires the individual to represent GZA in client interactions from proposal development, contracting and project performance phases and to be responsible for day-to-day execution of technical, risk-management and financial aspects of each project. The growth aspect of this role will involve working with other GZA’s leaders, corporate marketing and communications team to build the practice and further establish GZA’s services within the local market. The role will require strategic planning activities and professional networking, and the development and mentoring of staff. The candidate should be self-motivated, well organized, detail oriented, quality focused, safety-minded, and must be able to multi-task.

Key Duties

  • Managing a multi-disciplinary project team (including structural, geotechnical, and coastal professionals), delegating to office and field staff
  • Conducting both internal and client communications
  • Monitoring team and project performance for compliance with contractual agreements and budgets
  • Managing/Designing/Reviewing new and rehabilitated waterfront structures
  • Conducting and reviewing structural analyses and design calculations for waterfront structures
  • Overseeing structural condition assessments, load rating, and asset management evaluations for existing marine infrastructure
  • Coordinating with geotechnical and coastal engineers on foundation design, wave/current loading, and resilience considerations
  • Leading construction phase services, including submittal review, construction oversight and QA/QC, and contractor coordination
  • Leading and assisting with waterfront and coastal business development initiatives
  • Preparing proposals, technical reports, and design documentation with Principal guidance and review
  • Coordinating and leading team meetings with project staff and clients

Qualifications:

  • MSc. or Ph.D. in civil or structural engineering (with a focus on marine and waterfront structures preferred)
  • PE. license preferred (S.E. license a plus)
  • Professional licensure or the ability to obtain the licensing within the next 6 months
  • 10+ years of experience in structural design and analysis of waterfront and marine structures
  • Strong knowledge of relevant codes and standards (e.g., ACI, ASCE, PIANC, UFC, and other relevant guidelines)
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software (e.g., RISA, LPILE, or similar tools)
  • Experience with climate resilience, adaptation strategies, and design for coastal hazards (e.g., storm surge, sea level rise)
  • Familiarity with corrosion protection, marine materials, and durability design in coastal environments
  • Relevant local experience with regulatory knowledge and working relationships with the New England business community, and federal, state, and local agencies
  • Demonstrate professional judgment, consistency, strong attention to detail, and background of high-quality work products
  • Doer-seller aptitude with industry knowledge
  • Ability to collaborate in a multi-office, team environment
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented, safety-minded, and able to multi-task
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with clients, design team members, contractors, and construction managers

The base salary for this position may range between $125,000 and $155,000. The actual base salary and total compensation will depend on many factors, including location, candidate experience, education, professional licensure, and other qualifications.
