The Role
As a SeniorStaff Safety Analytics & Metrics Engineer, you will lead the definition, analysis, and communication of quantitative safety metrics that track safety performance across the robot lifecycle. This role is central to 1X’s mission to build credible, evidence-backed safety narratives that inform internal decision-making and external transparency. • Analyze data from simulation, validation, and field operations to assess safety performance

  • Identify regressions and emerging risks due to software or hardware changes

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Functional Safety, V&V, and Safety Assurance to ensure metrics support safety cases and deployment decisions

  • Clearly communicate uncertainty, assumptions, and data limitations

  • Support executive decision-making through concise, data-driven safety insights

Requirements

Must Have

  • M.S. or higher in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field

  • 10+ years of experience in safety analytics, system performance, or reliability engineering for safety-critical products (robotics, autonomous vehicles, medical devices, aerospace, or industrial automation)

  • Expertise defining and implementing metrics for complex, real-world systems

  • Proficiency in Python and SQL to analyze large-scale fleet data and build statistically sound metrics

  • Proven ability to reason about risk, uncertainty, and confidence levels

  • Strong quantitative and statistical reasoning skills

  • Excellent technical writing skills for both internal audiences and public-facing safety communication

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated analysis of safety performance in autonomous or learning-enabled systems

  • Application of statistical methods to model low-frequency, high-severity events in safety-critical systems

  • Experience supporting external reviews, audits, or regulatory scrutiny with quantitative safety evidence

Benefits & Compensation

  • Salary Range: $ 170k-$259k+ Equity

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Paid time off and holidays
