The Sports, Physical Activity and Recreation (SPAR) program supports Alberta’s non-profit sport system to deliver affordable access to sport and recreation opportunities. Role Responsibilities

Help shape a strong, inclusive and accountable sport system that supports organizations, leaders and participants across Alberta.

As a Senior Sport Consultant, you will provide strategic leadership and expert advice to strengthen provincial sport organizations and advance an effective, safe and welcoming sport system. You will lead programs, partnerships, policy initiatives and funding accountability that support government priorities and respond to the evolving needs of Alberta’s sport community.

You will be responsible for

• Planning, delivering and evaluating sport programs and services aligned with ministry priorities.
• Managing funding programs and monitoring the accountability and effectiveness of provincial sport organizations.
• Providing expert advice on sport development, governance, organizational effectiveness and emerging issues.
• Developing and supporting policies that strengthen the provincial sport delivery system.
• Building collaborative partnerships with governments, agencies, sport organizations and community stakeholders.
• Administering program and grant budgets to ensure responsible use of public funds.
• Supporting leadership development and organizational capacity within the sport sector.
• Coordinating staff, volunteers and stakeholders to achieve shared program outcomes.

Qualifications

Required: University degree Sport, Physical Education, Recreation or related, PLUS 4 years related experience or equivalent as described.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

For Example:

Related 1 year certificate PLUS a minimum 7 years of experience.

Related 2-year diploma PLUS a minimum 6 years of experience.

Related minimum 8 years of experience.

Must-Haves:

• Experience leading and delivering programs, initiatives, or services in the sport, recreation, community development, or public sector environment.
• Experience managing stakeholder relationships and collaborating with diverse partners to achieve shared outcomes.
• Strong knowledge of program development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
• Experience providing strategic advice, recommendations, and solutions on complex issues.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policy, legislation, standards, or governance frameworks.
• Experience managing budgets, funding programs, grants, or financial accountability processes.
• Strong communication, relationship-building, and facilitation skills.

Assets:

• Experience working with provincial sport organizations, recreation organizations, or sport system partners.
• Knowledge of sport governance, athlete development models, safe sport principles, and organizational effectiveness.
• Experience developing or influencing public policy, strategic plans, or sector-wide initiatives.
• Experience working within a government or broader public-sector environment.
• Experience leading cross-sector partnerships involving municipalities, non-profits, agencies, or other orders of government.
• Experience supporting leadership, capacity-building, or training initiatives for stakeholders.
• Knowledge of federal-provincial-territorial sport priorities, funding environments, or accountability frameworks.
