Auckland Council is looking for an experienced Senior Specialist – Event Security to join our Physical Security Advisory Services team.
This is a senior advisory role responsible for leading the planning and delivery of security arrangements for events held across Auckland Council venues and public spaces. You will provide expert risk-based security guidance and expertise to ensure events are safe, compliant and effectively coordinated.
Working across community, civic, high profile and large-scale events, you will lead security risk assessments, develop event security plans and advise on crowd safety, access control, perimeter protection, emergency management and incident response.
You will work closely with event organisers, event facilitators, council teams, venue operators, security providers, NZ Police and emergency services. Your ability to bring different stakeholders together, provide clear direction and make sound decisions will be essential to delivering safe and successful events across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities
In this role, you will:
• Lead the development and delivery of event security strategies, plans and operational briefings
• Conduct comprehensive security risk assessments, including threat, vulnerability and consequence analysis
• Provide specialist advice on crowd safety, access control, perimeter security and protective security measures
• Develop emergency response, evacuation and contingency arrangements for events
• Ensure security measures are appropriate and proportionate to each event’s risk profile
• Support event organisers with the procurement and management of security providers, including the development of performance measures
• Coordinate with internal teams, contractors, venue operators, NZ Police and emergency services
• Provide operational security support during events, including incident coordination and escalation
• Develop and maintain event security frameworks, standards and operating procedures
• Lead and deliver training and guidance to internal teams on event security requirements and good practice
• Lead post event security reviews, capture lessons learned and identify opportunities for improvement
• Promote strong security practices and contribute to a positive security culture across Auckland Council

You are an experienced security professional who can confidently move between strategic planning, specialist advice and operational delivery.
You will bring strong judgement, a calm and decisive approach, and the ability to lead security planning in complex and high-pressure environments. You will also be an effective communicator who can build trusted relationships and provide clear advice to senior stakeholders.
We are looking for:
• At least seven years of relevant experience in event security, risk management, event management or policing
• Extensive experience in event security, crowd management or protective security
• Proven experience planning and delivering security for large scale, complex or high risk events
• Strong knowledge of public safety, crowd dynamics and risk management principles
• Experience working in environments involving multiple agencies, including law enforcement and emergency services
• Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, health and safety obligations and event security requirements
• Proven ability to coordinate operational delivery and respond effectively to incidents
• Strong stakeholder engagement, influencing and relationship management skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to brief senior leaders
• A proactive, detail focused and risk based approach
• A current full New Zealand driver’s licence
Experience within local government, major events or critical infrastructure environments would be an advantage.
This position is classified as safety sensitive under Auckland Council’s Drugs and Alcohol Guide. The successful applicant will be required to meet the requirements associated with a safety sensitive role.
