Job Description

Optum is a global organization that delivers care, aided by technology to help millions of people live healthier lives. The work you do with our team will directly improve health outcomes by connecting people with the care, pharmacy benefits, data and resources they need to feel their best. Here, you will find a culture guided by inclusion, talented peers, comprehensive benefits and career development opportunities. Come make an impact on the communities we serve as you help us advance health optimization on a global scale. Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together.

Optum Technology University (OTU) is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to support large‑scale engineering learning and enablement across Optum. This is not a traditional product or application delivery role. Instead, you will use your hands‑on engineering experience to design, validate, and facilitate practical technical learning - including labs, workshops, demos, and reference implementations - used by thousands of engineers.

In this role, you will help engineers adopt modern development practices, with a solid focus on AI‑assisted coding, cloud‑native development, and secure engineering. You will collaborate with instructional designers, engineering SMEs, and Tiger Teams, and deliver and facilitate hands‑on training sessions, workshops, and live technical labs.

This role is ideal for a senior engineer who enjoys teaching, influence, and working at scale.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Act as a hands‑on engineering practitioner and technical SME within OTU, supporting software engineering learning initiatives
  • Design, review, and maintain sample code, labs, demos, and reference implementations used in OTU programs
  • Ensure learning materials reflect current, real‑world engineering practices, not purely theoretical examples
  • Contribute to AI‑assisted coding enablement (e.g., Codex, Claude, or similar) by developing:
    • Guardrail‑aligned usage examples
    • Secure and responsible AI development patterns
    • Practical, production‑ready workflows
  • Apply enterprise AI and Responsible AI guidance in clear, actionable developer‑facing learning content
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, practical explanations for engineers at varying experience levels
  • Partner with instructional designers to ensure learning content is technically accurate, accessible, and scalable
  • Review and contribute to role‑based learning pathways, 'what good looks like' examples, and learner readiness guidance
  • Design and deliver hands‑on training sessions, workshops, and live labs; facilitate interactive learning experiences such as live coding, walkthroughs, and working sessions
  • Pilot, validate, and continuously improve labs and exercises based on learner and facilitator feedback
  • Collaborate with Tiger Teams, cloud and security SMEs, and platform/tooling owners to align learning content with enterprise standards and day‑to‑day developer workflows
  • Stay current on modern engineering trends and continuously evolve learning content as tools and practices change
  • Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). The Company may adopt, vary or rescind these policies and directives in its absolute discretion and without any limitation (implied or otherwise) on its ability to do so

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Solid hands‑on experience with modern development practices (cloud‑native development, APIs, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing)
  • Experience working in enterprise‑scale environments with governance, security, and compliance requirements
  • Experience supporting engineers during live labs or exercises, including debugging and guidance without taking over execution
  • Experience using an LMS (e.g., Cornerstone or similar) to support technical learning or enablement
  • Experience curating and maintaining technical content such as documentation, labs, learning modules, or reference materials
  • Experience with AI‑assisted development tools or ML‑adjacent workflows, and staying current with evolving capabilities
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating technical training, workshops, or hands‑on labs
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and platform‑based architectures
  • Proven ability to write, review, explain, and teach code clearly to a broad engineering audience
  • Proven solid communication and collaboration skills; comfortable working across technical and non‑technical partners

Why This Role

  • Influence how thousands of engineers across Optum learn and adopt modern engineering practices
  • Combine hands‑on engineering credibility with teaching and facilitation at scale
  • Collaborate with senior engineering, architecture, and security leaders on high‑impact learning initiatives
  • Help shape Optum's approach to AI‑enabled software engineering through practical, applied learning
