ABOUT TRABUS

Trabus Technologies (TRABUS) is a minority-owned, service-disabled veteran-owned small business (SDVOSB) headquartered in San Diego, providing advanced wireless technology solutions, cybersecurity expertise, artificial intelligence, data science, and software engineering capabilities to federal and commercial clients since 2010. Our diverse technical strengths span emerging wireless innovations and engineering support to the armed services.

TRABUS has been recognized on the Inc. 5000 list over the years, reflecting our continued growth and commitment to delivering innovative, mission-focused solutions to our customers.

POSITION SUMMARY

TRABUS has an opportunity for a Senior Software Development Engineer to lead the architecture, design, and implementation of core software components for next-generation Software-Defined Radio (SDR) wireless mesh networking systems. In this role, you will drive the development of resilient ad-hoc mesh networking protocols, architect zero-trust encryption frameworks, and optimize embedded database storage for real-time edge performance in mission-critical environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the technical design and optimization of tactical routing algorithms, dynamic topology discovery, and low-latency networking protocols for resilient SDR mesh networks.
  • Architect and implement end-to-end cryptographic frameworks, key management protocols (KMP), and secure boot/data-at-rest solutions tailored for low-bandwidth or contested RF environments.
  • Design and tune lightweight embedded database systems such as SQLite, DuckDB, LMDB, or custom time-series engines to manage high-throughput packet logging, state tracking, and local data persistence under tight memory limits.
  • Write production-grade, low-latency C/C++ or Rust software targeted for Linux-based SDR hardware, taking ownership of subsystem performance from concept through field deployment.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, drive code reviews, lead technical trade studies, and collaborate closely with systems, RF, and hardware engineering teams.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in modern C++ (17/20), C, or Rust.
  • Extensive experience with Layer 2/3 networking, TCP/IP, UDP, custom packet processing, and wireless mesh routing protocols such as OLSR, BATMAN-adv, or AODV.
  • Deep hands-on experience with cryptographic standards including AES-GCM, TLS 1.3, ECC, IPsec, NSA Type 1, or Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) standards.
  • Proven experience implementing and optimizing embedded relational, key-value, or time-series databases in constrained embedded systems.
  • Direct experience with Software-Defined Radio frameworks such as GNU Radio, UHD, or REDHAWK and RF physical-layer interactions.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required due to defense/government compliance requirements.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active DoD Security Clearance (Secret or Top Secret/SCI).
  • Experience with MIL-STD communications protocols, anti-jamming techniques, or low-probability-of-intercept/detection (LPI/LPD) waveforms.
  • Familiarity with containerization tools such as Docker or Podman and automated CI/CD workflows for secure embedded targets.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.

About Trabus Technologies

TRABUS is a minority-owned, Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) headquartered in San Diego, California with regional offices in the National Capitol Region. Incorporated in 2010, TRABUS provides professional support services to the U.S. government and specializes in the development of technical solutions across five major portfolios: Wireless Technologies, Artificial Intelligence & Data Science, Maritime Transportation, Environmental Informatics, and Cybersecurity. With just under 50 employees, the majority of the TRABUS workforce consists of scientists, engineers, military veterans, and management professionals who support to the local defense industrial base and a growing number of technical innovations in wireless communications and data science.

TRABUS has made the “Inc. 5000” list seven years in a row as one of the 5,000 fastest-growing privately held small companies in the United States. In 2022, TRABUS was recognized as one of Southern California’s Cool Companies by San Diego Connect and was featured in San Diego’s first annual innovation day—Five.Ten.Thirty— as one of the fastest growing and most exciting Tech & Life Sciences companies in the region. Also in 2022, the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce named Trabus Technologies Innovator of the Year for the development of a ground-breaking wireless innovation called SEPP. This spectrally efficient peer-to-peer technology allows for simultaneous wireless conversations on the same frequency without the need for cell towers or infrastructure. TRABUS’ other best-known innovation, RippleGo, is a state-of-the-art information-sharing solution for the maritime transportation industry that provides up-to-date information on travel time predictions, bridge clearance calculations, forecasted river level conditions, navigation hazards and lock status changes using data analytics and artificial intelligence.
