Role summary

We're hiring a senior developer for our Desktop team. The team owns our current desktop products, which are Windows applications built on Visual Basic 6 (VB6) and COM, and which customers depend on every day, while CalcAir builds modern web versions of those products.

This is a lasting senior role for an engineer who knows VB6 deeply and uses AI tools to understand, document, and safely improve existing code. Our desktop products will stay in service for as long as customers depend on them, and you'll help keep them reliable, make the team's day-to-day work smoother, and help plan the path from VB6 to the web.

We're adopting an AI-Driven Development Lifecycle (AI-DLC) approach, where AI takes on more of the analysis and building while engineers set direction, review the work, and make the decisions that matter. You'll work with our Desktop Team Lead and the Desktop team, with Product, and with Infrastructure & IT on builds and releases.

What you'll accomplish in your first year

  • First 90 days: Learn our VB6 codebase and the business rules behind it. Use Claude Code to map the highest-risk areas and document how they work. Get comfortable with our GitHub and Azure DevOps (ADO) workflows, and note where the team's process creates the most friction.
  • By 6 months: Add tests around critical workflows so changes are safer. Lead a set of fixes or improvements from planning through release, using AI-DLC checkpoints. Make the first improvements to how we build, test, and release. Share practical AI techniques for legacy code with the team.
  • By 12 months: Help define the path from our VB6 products to the web, including which business rules to carry forward and which to rebuild. Deliver the first meaningful piece of that work, and keep improving how the team works along the way.

Responsibilities

Desktop product support

  • Lead the technical work on VB6 desktop products, including defect fixes, enhancements, and releases.
  • Serve as the senior technical resource for hard problems and critical customer issues.
  • Keep current products stable, supportable, and documented for as long as customers depend on them.

Process and workflow improvement

  • Find and fix the slow, manual, or error-prone steps in how we build, test, and release desktop products.
  • Improve how we use GitHub and Azure DevOps (ADO), so work is tracked, reviewed, and released consistently.
  • Use Claude Code to automate repetitive work in analysis, testing, and documentation.
  • Turn what works into shared team practices, so the whole team benefits.

Legacy code understanding and modernization

  • Use Claude Code to analyze VB6 code: map workflows, extract business rules, and identify risk before changes are made.
  • Write and maintain characterization tests that capture current behavior, so the web versions can be checked against it.
  • Work with Product to decide which business rules and behaviors carry forward into the web products.

AI-assisted development

  • Use Claude Code as a regular part of your daily work for analysis, changes, tests, and documentation.
  • Apply AI-DLC practices and help the Desktop team use AI safely on legacy code.
  • Review AI-generated changes carefully, especially in code with little test coverage.

Collaboration and delivery

  • Work in GitHub for source control and pull requests, and in Azure DevOps (ADO) for work items and tracking.
  • Partner with Infrastructure & IT on builds, releases, and environments.
  • Mentor Desktop team members and document what you learn, so it isn't held by one person.

Required qualifications

  • 6+ years of professional software development, including substantial production work in VB6.
  • Deep understanding of Windows desktop application architecture, data access, and debugging VB6 applications.
  • Strong working knowledge of the COM model, ActiveX components, the Windows registry, and how legacy 32-bit applications behave on modern Windows systems.
  • Experience reading and documenting large legacy codebases, and turning them into clear descriptions of how things work.
  • Daily, hands-on use of Claude Code or a comparable agentic coding tool, with examples you can walk us through.
  • A working understanding of AI-DLC and how it applies to legacy work.
  • Experience with GitHub and Azure DevOps (ADO).
  • A track record of improving team processes and workflows, such as build, test, and release steps, and making the changes stick.
  • Senior-level judgment: you can weigh risk, explain tradeoffs to non-technical leaders, and say when something should wait.

Nice to have

  • Experience migrating VB6 or other legacy Windows applications to .NET or the web.
  • Experience with .NET/C#, React, or SQL Server, to help with the path to the web.
  • Experience writing characterization or regression tests for legacy systems.
  • Experience building AI-assisted workflows for a team, such as custom skills, agents, or MCP integrations.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps (ADO) pipelines.
