Role and Responsibilities

Delivering business value by designing and developing high-quality software and systems in a highly collaborative environment. Raising the quality, and velocity of other team members.

Reports to

Engineering Manager or Senior Engineering Manager

Main activities

  • Review and debug code, systems and infrastructure
  • Perform validation and verification testing
  • Understand and exhibit the company's core values ( Values.pdf)
  • Communicate progress, blockers and risks
  • Develop tools and automation by producing clean, efficient code
  • Maintain systems via a mix of manual and automated techniques
  • Participate in on-call support of the Pushpay products, if on the on-call roster
  • Review system generated events and alerts and industry sources for operational issues and security concerns
  • Produce value to the business by regularly shipping robust, high quality features into the production environment
  • Identify problems and risks in your own work, and that of others. Suggest improvements to design and approach
  • Be aware of, and contribute to refining, the engineering "lore and custom" (aka. culture, policies, and procedures)
  • Identify, prioritize and execute tasks in the software development life cycle
  • Actively improve operability of systems and operational awareness of teams
  • Take the initiative to identify and/or fix issues before being assigned them
  • Recruit new Engineers (sales pitch, technical screens)
  • Contribute to SRE Operability and Architecture Reviews with other engineering teams
  • Be highly aware of the profound security and compliance ramifications of the nature of our business (specifically our PCI compliance requirements)
  • Develop high-quality system design and architecture
  • Break down larger pieces of work into small, well-scoped pieces for other team members
  • Take end-to-end responsibility on features of increasing complexity
  • Spend time making sure junior or new engineers unfamiliar with the tech or processes we have understand what they are doing and why they are doing it
  • Work with Software Engineers, Quality Assistance, Product and other parts of the business to review requirements and proposed solutions and provide input into these processes (which may include ideation, algorithms, processes and feature design) which may constitute intellectual property that belongs to Pushpay
  • Develop software and tooling (code, algorithms, designs, processes and practices) that will be incorporated into Pushpay products (both internal and external) and associated infrastructure which may constitute intellectual property that belongs to Pushpay

  • Proactive researcher of industry trends, consistently integrating new technologies and ideas.
  • Commercially astute professional with high proficiency in:
    • Cloud Platforms: AWS, GCP, Azure
    • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Cloudformation
    • Command Line Environments: Shell, PowerShell, Bash
    • Database Management: Relational and document-based systems
    • Web Technologies: HTTP, SSL/TLS, REST APIs, and GraphQL
    • Programming Languages: Python, Go, Rust, JavaScript, and .NET
    • Version Control: DVCS (preferably Git)
    • CI/CD Tooling: GitHub Actions and Jenkins
    • Project Management: Bug tracking systems such as Jira
  • Capable architect of complex, end-to-end software solutions.
  • Excellent communicator, proficient in both written and verbal technical documentation.
  • Self-managed professional with strong time management and expectation-setting skills.
  • Collaborative teammate, generous with knowledge-sharing and mentorship.
  • Strategic thinker able to articulate work in both technical and business-impact terms.

Typical experience

  • 5+ years of relevant SRE, systems or software engineering experience; “relevant” being: Developing Internet-scale multi-user web/mobile/cloud type software products
  • Applicable tertiary qualifications
