He angitūtanga: The Opportunity
Join Auckland Council as a Senior Animal Shelter Officer (Operations) and play a pivotal role in overseeing and coordinating the operations within the shelter. In this key leadership position, you'll manage the care and management of impounded dogs, conduct assessments, handle financial transactions, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation. You will also guide the Animal Shelter Officer (Operations) staff, ensuring a high standard of care and operational efficiency.

As the Senior Animal Shelter Officer, you’ll be responsible for the release of impounded dogs, customer-facing interactions regarding the Dog Control Act 1996, and ensuring that Auckland Council meets its statutory obligations under key legislation such as the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and Impound Act 1955.

To thrive in this role, you’ll need a blend of strong leadership, operational management skills, and hands-on experience with animal care. You’ll be someone who can manage a team, handle sensitive customer interactions, and ensure compliance with animal welfare legislation. With at least five years of experience in a similar role, you’ll have a solid understanding of animal management practices, regulatory compliance, and effective emergency response strategies.

Key Responsibilities:
• Lead and coordinate Animal Shelter Office staff to ensure high performance and well-being.
• Provide guidance on the release of impounded dogs and explain the Dog Control Act 1996 to dog owners.
• Manage shelter operations, including financial transactions and maintaining accurate records.
• Develop and implement operational strategies to improve animal care and shelter efficiency.
• Respond to emergency situations and support crisis management within the shelter.

Key Skills:
• Strong communication, conflict management, and de-escalation skills.
• Leadership abilities to coach, train, and support a high-performing team.
• Experience with shelter systems, databases, and financial processes.
• Ability to interpret and implement relevant legislation.

Job Requirements:
• 5+ years of relevant experience in animal management or a related field.
• Experience in leadership roles and advanced operational management.
• Qualification in animal management, veterinary care, or similar is preferred.

Salary ranges from $76,000 and $89,000 plus KiwiSaver and benefits.
