Job Description

Senior Secondary Design Engineer HVDC oversees the Control & Protection design, development, and integration of Conventional Control systems, Electrical distribution, Digital control systems/software, telecom & monitoring for both High Voltage DC.

She/he is leading and coordinating a secondary design teams, collaborates with team leaders, support lead engineers, and manages the engineering process. Responsibilities include resource allocation, seeking design subcontractors for workload optimization, and ensuring efficient project execution within budget. You actively organize knowledge transfer and capitalize on experiences to enhance engineering efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

A specialist in Control, protection and other low voltage system:

  • Design the Control system, protection system, Electrical distribution, telecom & monitoring of complex HVDC substations including single line diagram, schematic diagram, protection system, electrical consumption, and design of auxiliary services, interlocking, communication & network.

  • Initiate & support the procurement of equipment through bill of material and associated specifications

  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to ensure the integration into the overall substation design.

  • Provide technical support to customers, project and tendering teams.

  • Consulted on design task list at project launch for scope of work and time scheduling.

  • Check that all required engineering tools are available.

A Team Leader:

  • Leadership: Inspire and mentor your team of Designers for project success.

  • Process Ownership:
    Manage the Control& Protection Design process, ensuring adherence to standards.
    Drive continuous improvement of both processes and tools, ensuring alignment with customer and market needs
    Develop strategic partnerships with internal and external engineering suppliers.

  • Projects Oversight: Direct design activities to ensure alignment with project milestones and objectives.

  • Resource Optimization:
    Allocate resources based on projects milestone
    Enhance internal competencies for efficient subcontracting
    Addressing skill gaps through targeted people development plan..

  • Collaboration:
    Foster seamless collaboration with cross-functional teams.
    Build engineering strategic partnerships to enhance project delivery and outcomes.
    You support your project team lead at project launch

  • Performance Management:
    Accountable for design budget on projects and tendering support
    Establish and monitor performance metrics, providing constructive feedback for team development.

Qualifications / Essential Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.

  • Extensive expertise in substation control system design, electrical distribution, ancillary services, and comprehensive knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and tools.

  • Several years of hands-on experience in engineering within EPC projects, including Transmission & Distribution (T&D), Power Generation, or equivalent.

  • Significant background in the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) industry.

  • Proven leadership with a strong technical foundation and effective problem-solving skills.

  • Familiarity with products, manufacturing processes, project execution risks, and processes.

  • Experience with CAD software and substation design tools is advantageous.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, adept at creating and delivering presentations to stakeholders.

  • Capable of working under pressure to meet deadlines while prioritizing safety, quality, and engineering integrity.

  • Flexibility in working hours and willingness to travel globally

  • Fluent in English and minimum B2 level in German
