Senior Scientist

Location: Lekki, Lagos
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: ₦350,000 – ₦400,000 net
Experience Level: Minimum 4 years post NYSC experience

The Senior Scientist will be responsible for performing and overseeing advanced laboratory testing, ensuring accuracy of results, maintaining quality standards, and supporting diagnostic excellence within the laboratory.

The role requires strong technical expertise in medical laboratory science, adherence to quality systems, and the ability to supervise laboratory processes while ensuring compliance with regulatory and operational standards.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong analytical capability, attention to detail, and experience in a fast-paced diagnostic laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing & Analysis

• Perform and supervise complex laboratory tests across assigned diagnostic departments.

• Ensure accuracy, reliability, and timely delivery of test results.

• Review and validate test results before reporting where required.

• Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment in line with SOPs.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

• Adhere strictly to laboratory quality management systems and SOPs.

• Ensure compliance with ISO standards, regulatory requirements, and internal policies.

• Participate in internal quality control and external quality assurance programs.

• Report deviations, errors, and non-conformances promptly.

Laboratory Operations Support

• Support daily laboratory workflow and ensure efficient sample processing.

• Ensure proper handling, storage, and documentation of specimens.

• Maintain laboratory hygiene, safety, and biosafety standards.

• Assist in maintaining turnaround time (TAT) targets.

Equipment & Inventory Management

• Ensure proper use, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

• Monitor reagent and consumable usage and report shortages.

• Support inventory control to minimize wastage and downtime.

Reporting & Documentation

• Maintain accurate and complete laboratory records and logs.

• Generate and review technical reports as required.

• Ensure proper documentation of all laboratory activities.

Team Collaboration

• Work closely with Laboratory Managers, QA Officers, and other scientists.

• Provide guidance and support to junior laboratory staff where necessary.

• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the laboratory.

Health, Safety & Best Practices

• Adhere strictly to laboratory safety protocols and infection control guidelines.

• Ensure safe handling and disposal of biological and chemical materials.

• Promote a culture of safety and compliance within the laboratory.

Requirements / Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related discipline.

• Must be registered with MLSCN

• Membership of AMLSN is an added advantage.

Experience

• Minimum of 4 years post NYSC relevant experience in a diagnostic or medical laboratory.

• Experience across multiple laboratory departments is an advantage.

• Strong hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and diagnostic procedures.

Technical Skills

• Strong knowledge of laboratory diagnostic procedures and methodologies

• Understanding of laboratory quality systems (ISO 15189 or equivalent)

• Proficiency in laboratory equipment operation and maintenance

• Ability to interpret and validate laboratory results

• Good computer skills (Microsoft Office and laboratory systems)
