Senior Scientific Officer (26270199)

The Centre for Exercise Science and Medicine (CESAME) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Scientific Officer to support the development, operation and strategic use of its multidisciplinary research platforms and laboratory infrastructure. CESAME integrates research in exercise science, sports medicine, genomics, multi-omics, exercise physiology, biomechanics, environmental physiology, wearable technologies, digital health, artificial intelligence, precision medicine and translational health research.

The appointee will be a PhD-level scientist who will work closely with the Director and research teams to strengthen the Centre’s scientific research capacity, support multidisciplinary research delivery, enhance the effective utilisation of advanced research infrastructure, and contribute to grant development, collaborative projects and research outputs.

Responsibilities:

The Senior Scientific Officer will:

• Lead the daily operation of CESAME laboratories, facilities, and research platforms, including scheduling, user access, platform utilisation, equipment readiness, technical resource allocation, and multidisciplinary project coordination.
• Manage advanced scientific instrumentation and technology platforms, including installation, calibration, maintenance, servicing, troubleshooting, upgrades, lifecycle management, vendor coordination, and replacement planning.
• Provide high-level scientific, technical, and operational support to researchers and users, including advice on platform use, experimental setup, workflow planning, methodological feasibility, service delivery, and protocol implementation.
• Contribute intellectually and practically to CESAME research activities, including project conception, experimental design, execution, analysis, interpretation, and development of multidisciplinary research programmes aligned with Centre priorities.
• Support grant development and externally funded proposals, serving where appropriate as a co-investigator, key scientific contributor, or technical lead, and advising on experimental design, platform capability, technical feasibility, equipment justification, budgeting, and implementation planning.
• Develop and maintain laboratory standards, SOPs, quality assurance systems, compliance procedures, and best-practice workflows to ensure safe, ethical, reproducible, and high-quality research across CESAME facilities.
• Lead procurement, resource management, and platform sustainability planning, including consumables, reagents, software, service contracts, maintenance agreements, budget monitoring, utilisation tracking, cost-recovery models, and infrastructure funding applications.
• Promote CESAME’s research capabilities and support external engagement, including facility demonstrations, scientific workshops, industry engagement, public-sector collaborations, and translation of research findings into applications in health, sport, medicine, technology, and public policy.
• Contribute to research outputs and knowledge dissemination, including peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, technical reports, research protocols, methodological development, and collaborative outputs.
• Foster a strong research culture within CESAME, including mentoring students and junior researchers, supporting visiting researchers and collaborators, coordinating laboratory research meetings, encouraging knowledge-sharing, and maintaining awareness of emerging methods and technologies.

Requirements:

Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant discipline, with at least 5 years of relevant research or professional experience, preferably in a university, research institute, healthcare, industry, or other research-intensive environment. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the following qualities and competencies:

• Substantial experience in research design, experimental planning, protocol development, data collection, analysis and interpretation;
• Proven experience in managing or supporting scientific laboratories, core facilities, research platforms or complex research infrastructure;
• Hands-on experience with advanced scientific instrumentation, technology platforms, equipment troubleshooting, maintenance and lifecycle management;
• Ability to provide high-level scientific, technical and methodological support to researchers, students and users;
• Experience in contributing to grant applications, equipment funding proposals, infrastructure bids or externally funded collaborative projects;
• Strong operational, financial and compliance management skills, including procurement, budgeting, resource allocation, SOP development, quality assurance and safety procedures;
• Excellent leadership, communication, organisational and collaborative skills, with the ability to mentor junior staff, students and research users; and
• Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English and Chinese.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
