The Nevada Department of Transportation is hiring for a Senior Safety Specialist, Consultation located in Carson City, NV. The primary duty for this position is to design, develop, and deliver a broad range of safety and health training across NDOT, ensuring employees at all levels receive effective instruction on regulations, hazard abatement, risk management, and safe work practices. This includes conducting training at worksites and centralized locations, maintaining curriculum and lesson plans, and ensuring training records, reports, sign in sheets, and compliance documentation are accurately managed within statewide systems such as SharePoint and the LMS (Neogov). The position serves as a liaison with the NDOT Training Section, participates in safety committees, and supports internal staff through clear communication, meeting documentation, and responsive coordination. Manages and safely transports audiovisual equipment, establishes appropriate training environments, and maintains statewide databases related to safety programs such as respiratory protection. Safety Specialists, Consultation promote and consult on recognized safety practices for a single State agency, a regulatory program directed toward external entities, or in the State’s Risk Management Division.

Examples of duties

Three or more years of applicable experience as described in the job duties and graduation from high school or equivalent education.

Qualifications

1. Conduct surveys of employer sites at the employer’s request and conduct pre-inspection reviews.
2. Identify potential hazards and recognized control and abatement procedures.
3. Meet with employes to discuss visit’s purpose, rights and responsibilities, and other pertinent information.
4. Review and evaluate written workplace safety programs for compliance, specificity, comprehensiveness, and implementation effectiveness.
5. Evaluate and analyze overall working and environmental conditions and work processes for compliance.
6. Sample common health hazards when identified hazards are imminently dangerous and take necessary steps to ensure employees are removed from danger.
7. Discuss the adequacy of workplace safety programs, identified hazards, standards not met, the feasibility of engineering controls and abatement alternatives, and issue non-penalty citations as appropriate.
8. Influence employers to take preventive or corrective actions and assign abatement periods in which serious regulatory violations must be corrected.
9. Make recommendations to enhance safety management systems.
10. Communicate with employers to promote change in management philosophy, organizational culture, work processes, and other areas.
11. Document findings and recommendations in comprehensive reports.
12. Provide informal on-site instruction on a variety of topics.
13. Conduct activities for a regulatory program directed toward external entities.
14. Analyze management and workplace safety systems to identify the system breakdown which allowed a hazard to occur.
15. Conduct surveys or compliance inspections involving multiple disciplines and state-of-the-art processes.
16. Act as a team leader by assigning and reviewing work, training, and providing input to performance evaluations and discipline.
17. Perform related duties as assigned.
