Job Description

Seymour Whyte is proud to be delivering multiple complex civil infrastructure projects across the Canberra region. With a solid pipeline of work ahead, we’re seeking an experienced Safety / Senior Safety Advisor to join our operations in Canberra and strengthen our local teams.

About the role

Reporting into the HSEQ team, you will be responsible for coordinating and mitigating health, safety and wellbeing risks across site operations. You’ll work closely with Project Managers, Supervisors and site crews to ensure compliance with Seymour Whyte safety systems, legislative requirements and client specifications, while actively championing a positive, proactive safety culture.

This is a hands‑on, influential role suited to a safety professional who enjoys being visible on site, mentoring others and embedding best‑practice safety as “business as usual”.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide expert health, safety and wellbeing advice to site and project teams
  • Prepare, implement and maintain project safety plans, systems and procedures
  • Conduct site inspections, audits and reviews, providing practical feedback and recommendations
  • Lead and support incident investigations, including corrective action development
  • Mentor and coach site personnel to continuously improve safety performance
  • Support injury management, rehabilitation and return‑to‑work processes
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of WHS legislation, industry standards and innovations
  • Foster open, transparent and collaborative safety leadership across projects
  • Share learnings and improvements across the broader Seymour Whyte business

About you

You’re a confident and respected safety professional with a strong construction or civil background and the ability to build trust across all levels of the workforce. You combine technical knowledge with a practical, people‑focused approach and take pride in being a visible safety leader on site.

We’re looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • 7+ years’ experience in a similar safety role within civil construction or a related industry
  • A safety‑first mindset with a genuine passion for protecting others
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage effectively with crews, leaders, clients and auditors
  • A minimum Diploma in OHS (degree desirable)
  • Relevant certifications including First Aid, Workplace Rehabilitation/RTW, ICAM (or equivalent) and construction‑related safety tickets
  • Sound working knowledge of plant operations and site‑based risks
  • A current driver’s licence and confidence working across active construction environments
