We set the company’s strategy and technology vision, offer an unparalleled research foundation for innovation, and provide critical support infrastructure for Nokia.

Within R&I, we drive Nokia's technology leadership by developing and bringing innovative concepts to industry and standardization organizations. R&I also works within the ecosystems to ensure an inventor friendly industry environment, favorable to Nokia’s business success. The unit has a strategic objective of anticipating, shaping, and protecting future technologies and systems and ensuring appropriate standards and industry specifications are developed.

Research in Research & Innovation comprises fundamental systematic research of an exploratory nature for developing new products and services as well as disruptive technologies superseding conventional approaches. It covers the provision of a comprehensive understanding of scientific insights, specifically leading to (pre-) standardization of ideas and concepts for 5G-Advanced and 6G technologies. We are looking for highly motivated and skilled people with a solid background in wireless communication to drive progress in 5G-Advanced and 6G radio technology.

Are you passionate about solving problems?

As part of our team, you will:

  • Drive progress as a technical lead, contributing to new products, processes, and standards in wireless communication, focusing on future 3GPP systems, specifically 5G-Advanced and 6G.
  • Work with a world-class team to drive 6G radio technologies and the evolution of 5G-Advanced in global standardization.
  • Research and develop joint sensing and communication (JSAC) technologies, exploring the convergence of radar sensing and wireless communication functionalities.
  • Work with synthetically generated and real measurements from existing simulators and Proof-of-Concept (PoC) systems.
  • Develop new joint sensing and communication schemes in the context of distributed sensing for an EU project.
  • Contribute to internal and external deliverables to EU project and standardization fora.
  • Carry out specialized activities/projects, demonstrating adaptability in complex business environments.
  • Communicate within and outside the team, influencing others to accept new concepts and practices.
  • Experience with EU research projects and collaborative international research initiatives.

Skills and experience:

  • Strong technical background in wireless communication and experience in innovating wireless communication technologies like MIMO, positioning, and sensing.
  • Solid knowledge of standards for mobile communications including 3GPP and ORAN.
  • Solid knowledge of methods to analyze and optimize performance of wireless systems, including hands-on experience in developing tools such as link-level and/or system-level simulators.
  • Proven software development skills, including Matlab, C, C++, and/or Python.
  • Experience in creating patentable concepts and innovation.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Leadership and collaborative mindset with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Strong professional ethics, open communication, and ability to rectify mistakes quickly.

Ways to stand out from the crowd:

  • Hands-on experience with AI/ML techniques applied to wireless communication.
  • Experience with joint sensing and communication systems or radar signal processing.
  • Background in distributed sensing systems and multi-node cooperative sensing architectures.
  • Proven track record of innovation like publications in top conferences and journals.

Other information

  • The position is for a postdoctoral contract (temporary contract) within the EU DISAC project.
