Job Description
The Division of Landscape Architecture, Department of Architecture invites applications for Senior Research Assistant / Research Assistant I/II in AI‑Curated Multilingual Visual Glossary for Architecture and Heritage (Ref. no.: 537323). Appointments will commence as soon as possible for 6 to 12 months, full‑time or part‑time, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability.
This position supports the Teaching Development Grant project “Bridging Linguistic and Conceptual Divides”, which is developing an AI‑curated, multilingual visual glossary and digital library for architectural and heritage conservation terminology in English, Mandarin (Simplified), and Cantonese (Traditional).
- RESPONSIBILITIES
Depending on experience and appointment level, the appointee will:
- Develop and maintain AI-assisted workflows for extracting, organizing, translating, and aligning architectural and heritage terminology from English and Chinese sources.
- Use current AI and coding tools, such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, or comparable tools, to support research, data processing, prototyping, testing, and documentation.
- Build or support practical NLP and retrieval workflows using embeddings, semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation, and related techniques.
- Curate multilingual datasets, including Simplified/Traditional Chinese conversion, terminology normalization, metadata, source documentation, and copyright records.
- Test AI-generated outputs, identify errors, and prepare materials for validation by academic and professional experts.
- Support the development of a web-based visual glossary prototype, including links between terminology, definitions, images, drawings, maps, and other relevant materials.
- Work with an interdisciplinary team and document methods, decisions, and project progress clearly.
- REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree or above in any discipline. Appointment at Senior Research Assistant, Research Assistant I, or Research Assistant II level will depend on qualifications and relevant experience.
Applicants should have:
- Some practical experience with Python, data processing, NLP, web development, or a related technical area, or clear evidence of the ability to learn these skills quickly.
- Experience using current AI tools for research, coding, data analysis, or problem-solving.
- Strong reading ability in Simplified and Traditional Chinese, sufficient for working with academic, policy, architectural, and heritage-related materials.
- Good written English and the ability to prepare clear research and technical documentation.
- Careful attention to data quality, source verification, copyright, and the limitations of AI-generated outputs.
- The ability to work independently, meet project milestones, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.
- For the Senior Research Assistant rank, stronger technical experience and the ability to lead parts of the AI workflow would be expected.
Preferred, but not required:
- Experience with advanced AI coding tools such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, or comparable agentic coding environments.
- Familiarity with embeddings, semantic search, RAG, tool calling, agentic workflows, MCP, or evaluation of AI-generated outputs.
- Experience with Chinese NLP, OCR, document AI, multimodal models, knowledge graphs, or large text corpora.
- Experience with web frameworks such as Streamlit, FastAPI, Flask, Django, or Next.js.
- Familiarity with Cantonese or Hong Kong terminology.
- An interest in architecture, landscape, urban planning, heritage conservation, or digital humanities.
