The Senior Registered Sleep Technologist is responsible for the daily procedures and supervision in the Sleep Lab and serves as Professional Practice Leader (PPL) for Polysomnographic Technology. The Senior Registered Sleep Technologist ensures maximum efficiency and productivity in service provision, as well as overseeing quality within the Sleep Lab. The Senior Registered Sleep Technologist serves as an advisor to staff in technical issues and all matters pertaining to patient care, and inter-departmental organization, and co-ordination necessary to fulfil patient needs and ensure patient safety. The Senior Registered Sleep Technologist provides guidance to the Registered Sleep Technologists. The Senior Registered Sleep Technologist is responsible to the Nurse Manager and collaborate's with the Medical Director.
The Professional Practice Leader (PPL) provides leadership in creating, articulating and sustaining an organization wide vision for the professional practice of sleep technology. The PPL is responsible for discipline-specific practices as these are integrated into patient care, education and research in accordance with the mission, values and professional standards of St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. The PPL serves to support the profession by advocating for an environment where ongoing learning, evidence-based practice, continuous quality improvement and research are supported.
What We are Looking For
• Baccalaureate degree in a related field of study
• Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification
• Current BCLS certification
• Membership in the Canadian Sleep Society and the American Association of Sleep Technologists
• Proof of leadership training is preferred
• Demonstrated evidence of leadership skills and issue management with a minimum of 5 to 7 years of proven ability to lead teams effectively, inspiring confidence and driving results in an academic health science centre
• Research experience is an asset
• Previous experience with the Natus Sleep System
• Patient relation skills and strong verbal and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to function independently and be self-directed
• Advanced computer skills preferred
• Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity and expertise in the care of seniors and their families
• Gentle Persuasive Approach training is preferred
Your Mission
• Liaises with the Medical Director, Manager of the Sleep Disorders Program in the planning, coordination of various activities of the Sleep Disorders Program and acts as an expert and resource for Human Resource issues that are relevant to the discipline including the following:
• Ensures profession-specific credentialing and orientation requirements are met and provides consultation when performance gaps are identified
• Provides input into performance evaluation activities related to professional practice issues
• Contributes to the development of job descriptions for the specific discipline within the organization and collaborates with management in recruitment of additional staff
• Provides consultation to program leadership in the identification of appropriate profession-specific staffing levels within a program
• Collaborates with management to ensure appropriate workload and patient activity targets and uniform workload and patient activity data as required by the organization
• Consults with managers to provide adequate coverage in the event of sickness, vacation, and other temporary absences/ vacancies
• As PPL performs the following quality assurance responsibilities:
• Collaborates with managers in the development, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of quality improvement initiatives which are in alignment with established SJHH standards
• Monitors quality improvement outcomes on a regular basis; develops action plans in consultation with the Medical Director and manager to address identified issues
• Coaches staff to ensure that continuous quality improvement initiatives are incorporated into day-to-day activities
• Contributes to performing sleep study analysis reporting, quality review of sleep study analysis and ongoing quality metrics related to sleep studies
• Contributes to organizational Accreditation activities
• Provides staff scheduling within established budget.
• Ensures accurate and timely submission of payroll information.
• Balances revenue generating with non-revenue generating activities to maintain a neutral budget while still providing service in a timely manner.
• Provides specific leadership to ensure processes are in place to support the goal that Standards of Practice are consistently met by all members of the discipline including the following:
• Facilitates policy/procedure development related to profession specific practice functions
• Functions as a resource for profession specific elements of quality assurance/ continuous quality improvement programs
• Participates on the Professional Advisory Committee to identify practice issues, anticipate practice issues relative to interdisciplinary and corporate initiatives and communicates to leadership when standards are not or will not be met by the organization
• Reports on the annual activities of the profession
• Acts as the official voice of the organization for the discipline and maintains effective communication within the discipline throughout the organization
• Promotes and develops strategies and mechanisms that foster learning, professional growth, mentoring and teaching for the discipline and promotes, supports and facilitates research activities
