Our Purpose

We are seeking a Senior R&D Engineering Manager to build and lead the multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for the development and delivery of advanced robotic and electromechanical systems. The role will combine people leadership, technical direction and programme execution to deliver across the product development lifecycle.

This is a highly visible leadership role, partnering across engineering, operations, quality, supply chain and other core functions. The successful candidate will establish the team and operating model, create clarity on priorities and accountabilities, and drive disciplined execution against scope, cost, quality and schedule commitments.

The role will be based in Galway, Ireland, within Medtronic’s global centre for innovation in minimally invasive and robotic technologies.

A Day in The Life Of:

  • Build, lead and develop the R&D and execution team required to realise the overall vision for program success.
  • Partner with the technical lead and cross-functional stakeholders to define programme scope, technical deliverables, key milestones, budget and integrated project plans.
  • Provide functional and people leadership across a multidisciplinary team, setting clear objectives, reviewing progress and building a performance-oriented and inclusive culture.
  • Plan, document and drive execution across mechanical, electrical, systems, software, test and operations interfaces to achieve critical programme milestones.
  • Coordinate engineering, operations, quality, regulatory, supply chain and other stakeholders to align priorities, resolve dependencies and accelerate decisions.
  • Maintain accountability for scope, cost, quality and schedule, remove barriers and escalating issues with clear recommendations and decision points.
  • Proactively identify technical and execution risks, then develop mitigation and recovery plans with defined owners, actions and completion criteria.
  • Build engineering capability through coaching, meaningful feedback, stretch assignments, succession planning and targeted talent strategies.
  • Drive functional excellence, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across development processes, product readiness and cross-site ways of working.
  • Promote design rigour and compliance with applicable quality-system, design-control, risk-management and regulatory requirements throughout the development lifecycle.

Key Skills & Experience

  • 7+ years related experience with L8 Bachelors Qualification in an Engineering discipline
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant engineering experience, including progressive leadership responsibility in a functional, product-development or technical programme environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex, cross-functional technical projects involving electromechanical products, manufacturing, operations or product development.
  • Proven people-leadership capability, including team formation, talent development, performance management and organisational capability building.
  • Experience establishing integrated plans, managing programme risks and dependencies, and delivering against scope, cost, quality and schedule commitments.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a highly regulated environment and to work across diverse functions, geographies and organisational boundaries.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder-management, strategic-planning and decision-making skills.
